Re: Tigers declared extinct in Cambodia, but...
Exactly, I laughed at that. That's why they're reintroducing them. But again, it's a plan doomed for failure given the lack of wild game. A tiger isn't a reptile that can survive on 2g per day for months at a time. I'm surprised WWF is all over this. I guess they can't say no to a donation and will try to make it work regardless of the reality on the ground.

Re: Tigers declared extinct in Cambodia, but...
Update on the tiger front. WWF is pushing for the reintroduction of tigers. The more the better, says HE. This looks to have the makings of a well-thought out project.
More tigers means a lot more tourists, say NGOs
A project to increase the number of wild tigers in the northeastern part of Cambodia was put forward to the Cambodian government by a group of NGOs yesterday.
At a Protection and Conservation of Wild Life seminar, chaired by Prime Minister HE, country director of WWF Cambodia Seng Teak said the project to increase the number of wild tigers in Ratanakkiri and Mondulkiri would attract tourists and generate income for locals.
“Wildlife sightseeing, particularly watching wild tigers, has generated economic growth in some countries, and in Cambodia could create jobs for local people,” Mr. Teak said. “The northeastern area, which the government has set as a possible tourist destination, has wide potential for developing a wildlife sightseeing sector for Southeast Asia.”
Prime Minister HE expressed strong support for the project, asking the Ministries of Environment, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to work with WWF and other NGOs on the project.
“The Ministry of Environment must work with WWF to bring wild tigers into the country,” Mr HE said. “The more we can breed, the better.” ...

Yeah, the tigers can just hang around the rubber plantations picking off stray dogs and kids.CEOCambodiaNews wrote: ↑Mon Aug 28, 2017 11:30 pm This looks to have the makings of a well-thought out project.

The problem is they'd organise busloads of Chinese tourists, and they'd kill them for medicine.
If only Blake had not been interrupted
Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night;
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
In what distant deeps or skies.
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand, dare seize the fire?
And what shoulder, & what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?
What the hammer? what the chain,
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp,
Dare its deadly terrors clasp!
When the stars threw down their spears
And water'd heaven with their tears:
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?
Tyger Tyger burning bright,
In the forests of the night:
What immortal hand or eye,
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

The authorities are going ahead with their plan to import and release tigers as a tourist attraction in Mondulkiri.
Tigers could boost tourism: Government
6 October 2017
- The Ministry of Tourism aims to form partnerships with relevant stakeholders to boost the protection of natural resources in the country’s northeast and is looking to set up reserves for wild tigers to capitalise on opportunities to attract environmentally-minded local and international visitors.
Thong Khon, the Minister of Tourism, told a workshop on ecotourism and wildlife held on Wednesday that the northeast is an area with significant tourist potential, with great biodiversity, including a number of endangered species.“The Ministry of Tourism aims to develop the northeast, especially Mondulkiri, to make it one of the country’s major tourist draws, particularly for ecotourism and wildlife,” he said.
The Ministry of Environment recently started negotiations with a number of conservation organisations – including WWF Cambodia – to import tigers from India and release them in the Sre Pok Wildlife Sanctuary in Mondulkiri province. The government and WWF Cambodia plan to release a total of eight tigers in Mondulkiri province by 2022.
Mr Khon explained that the wild tiger is a symbol of national identity. However, in the last 100 years, the global tiger population has declined dramatically, as much as 97 percent by some estimates. According to a 2007 report by the Ministry of Environment, only 10 to 15 tigers dwell in Cambodian forests. No sightings have been made in more than one year.

Re: Tigers declared extinct in Cambodia, but...
I've spent some time in Ratanakiri, getting to know a few people who spend a lot of time inside Virachey, and the number I hear for tigers up there is ≈10.
So yes, functionally extinct.
I'd presume a few of those tigers are crossing into Laos or Vietnam.
