Truck Collision Leaves 29 Garment Workers Injured

A truck carrying firewood smashed head-on into a truck full of garment workers in Kompong Chhnang province’s Samakki Meanchey district on Friday morning, injuring 29 of the workers, a police official said.

Deputy district police chief Chum Vibal said the wood-carting Nissan pickup was driving from an unknown location to Phnom Penh on National Road 5, while the Hyundai truck, carrying about 40 garment workers, was traveling in the opposite direction in Sethei commune at the time of the crash, about 6:20 a.m.

“The accident was caused by the Nissan pickup truck,” he said, adding that its driver fled before police arrived at the scene.
“The driver was driving very fast in the rain. That’s why the truck skidded and smashed into the Hyundai coming from the opposite direction,” Mr. Vibal said...

Garment worker crash deaths fall

More than 100 garment workers died in traffic accidents last year, a 21 percent drop on 2015, the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) reported yesterday.
The NSSF said garment workers were involved in 5,609 traffic accidents in 2016. Of these cases, 103 workers died and 7,446 were injured, 970 seriously.

The report said that compared with the same period in 2015, traffic accidents decreased by 882 or 14 percent, but the total number of victims increased by 89 workers or one percent.
It said the number killed fell by 27 or 21 percent. Those seriously injured decreased by 98 or nine percent, but light injuries rose by 214 or three percent.

Cheav Bunrith, director of the policy division and a spokesman for NSSF, said yesterday at a meeting reviewing the 2016 results that the factors causing traffic accidents were speeding, drunk driving, overtaking and not giving way when driving...
