Re: These People Were Arrested by the Khmer Rouge and Never Seen Again
It's a bit disappointing CEO chose to run it for as long as they did.
May I, respectfully, ask why the mods did not make this decision themselves, earlier?
Thought it was OK? Or a press freedom thing maybe? Or just the old "we are not a publisher" line?
Not asking for "accountability" or to haul you over the coals - just interested in the thinking.
Thanks.
ALL of this is good discussion, i'll grudgingly conceded that to the artist. Not that that was is his intention.

@SternAAlbifrons Not speaking for CEO, but PR posted an international news item concerning Cambodia. It wasn't posted by CEO.SternAAlbifrons wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 7:26 pm It's a bit disappointing CEO chose to run it for as long as they did.

As for keeping the thread going, well, the overall reaction from people posting here is shock and disbelief that someone could be so insensitive. I think that this could be useful input for the so-called "artist" and others, (I hope he is reading this), to reflect seriously on their subject matter in future.

Re: These People Were Arrested by the Khmer Rouge and Never Seen Again
I don't get that reasoning, AM.
This deeply offends people so we will leave it there - so everybody can express their disgust.
and PS, leaving it up will be a good learning experience for the original exploiter.
sideline, A couple of weeks ago i posted in relation to the news that some leading light had died.
I suggested that because he was a public figure, his choice, it would be ok to write about some controversial aspects of his life (quite normal practice in the media).
However, i had not realised that some readers knew the man, were his friends. I had not considered how it would offend them.
I was very quickly alerted to all that - and realised i had made a BIG mistake.
If i had posted something negative, no way would i have agreed with those comments being left to stand knowing they were offending people deeply.
late; Wow, i think i can step back a bit. I just did another google and the Cambodians are howling their outrage quite well enough without me, thank you very much.

Re: These People Were Arrested by the Khmer Rouge and Never Seen Again
why shouldn't it run same as it's running on twitter?SternAAlbifrons wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 7:26 pm It's a bit disappointing CEO chose to run it for as long as they did.

It was important enough that the Khmer times ran a story on the article
and by bringing it to the attention of many;
The Ministry of culture posted a letter voicing their opposition
There was a petition against the "artist"
AND
vice took their article down.
I cant see any reason why the mods ( well one mod) would take down this thread
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Re: These People Were Arrested by the Khmer Rouge and Never Seen Again
A/ because running it is deeply offending people Richard.
"It offends the dignity of the victims and of the nation"
Take another google. Cambodia is howling at these photographs being used in this way - and circulated.
If you think it is ok to also put it out there, fine. But i don't think you can wash your hands of the decision by saying it is on twitter too.
Putting/keeping/having it up on here, ceo, is just promulgating the offence further, in my view.
I don't buy the argument about being ok to republish deeply offensive stuff so people can condemn the original publishing for being a deeply offensive.
Disingenuous < if ever there was was a use for the word.
just trying to keep a worthwhile discussion going..

Re: These People Were Arrested by the Khmer Rouge and Never Seen Again
Keep the thread running. It has nothing to do with CEO other than a discussion topic.
Anyway, media is jumping. I found this quote from Reuters relative. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-camb ... SKBN2BY0EO
"...the article caused a backlash on social media after comparisons with the original black-and-white photos showed that some subjects were smiling only in Loughrey’s colour images. The VICE article did not contain the original images.
and
"“It has been brought to our attention that the restored portraits published in this article were modified beyond colorization. We are reviewing the article and considering further actions to correct the record,” [Vice] said."
How anyone in Vice could have not have recognized that the photos were "modified beyond colorization" is ridiculous to me, and quite frankly I suspect, a lie.

Re: These People Were Arrested by the Khmer Rouge and Never Seen Again
All that ^^ aside.
This is actually pretty typical for Vice. even tho a rather extreme example.
They think they are so so smart, but are in fact the exact opposite - naive and shallow.
Insufferably righteous while being totally ignorant of the things they condemn.
Clueless.
and that is coming from somebody who generally sits on the the same side of the philosophical fence.
loI. I shudder with embarrassment, 'can't watch it.

Well it's news I would have not known about if not for CEO so if CEO had removed the thread before it took hold I'd be none the wiser, is this good or bad not sure ? ignorance is bliss
I'm standing up, so I must be straight.

Richard wasn't running the offending Vice article though,SternAAlbifrons wrote: ↑Sun Apr 11, 2021 9:14 pm A/ because running it is deeply offending people Richard.
he was bringing attention to the criticism it had received.
In my opinion what this guy has done is in very bad taste.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
