The Phnom Penh Post "Newspaper" to Shut Down End of Month

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

The Phnom Penh Post "Newspaper" to Shut Down End of Month

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

The Phnom Penh Post, a newspaper in Cambodia that has been running for more than 30 years, has announced that they will be shutting down at the end of this month because advertising revenue is way down since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Even more reason that CEO News needs to get our ass in gear again to bring the local Khmer news into English! We've been doing it as a free service to the community and not dependent on external funding, so apologies for taking a bit of a break.

*Edit: Sounds like their online stuff will continue, based on one of their journalist's posts on X.

They are NOT shutting down.

They are just stopping the print edition and going online edition only.

The announcement lacks clarity on that point, maybe the editor had already left?

The Phnom Penh Post will stop its English and Khmer print issues from March 29 and switch to online only, blaming rapidly decreasing revenue.
The Phnom Penh Post has announced it will halt its print issue amid depleting revenue, but it remains unclear if it will continue online.

In an announcement, the newspaper said, “Since the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent economic turndown, the company’s advertising revenues have significantly decreased.”

Cool, that seems correct based on a tweet by one of their journalists, but not clear from their announcement. Updated the OP.

Inside baseball here ... print media (news/journalism) is nearing it's final breath ... there are so many reasons for this ... mainly the shift in ad revenue to Big Tech such as Google, YT, TT, and the list goes on. The good old days of traditional journalism are just about kaput. Add the new trend of AI-generated news and the writing is on the wall. #RIPJournalism

This doesn't surprise me. A lot of the old original content that made the paper unique like The Gecko column is long gone and to make matters worse, they are now hiding all their pre-2010 articles behind a wall and charging for access per column at ridiculously high prices, haggling them like an old lady at the ផ្សារសើម:

Ridiculously cutthroat, without the old content there is no real reason to visit the site as it is now just another clone of Khmer Times.
