"The Most Powerful American in Cambodia", BRETTON SCIARONI Has Died

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Cambodia News: It's been reported to CEO that the American lawyer, Bret Sciaroni, has reportedly passed away, according to someone who knows him and has reached out to us. It hasn't appeared in the local Khmer news yet, but we'll update this topic when it does. Bret was called 'the most powerful American in Cambodia' by Forbes Magazine 4 years ago.

Bretton Sciaroni came to Cambodia in 1993, the year of its first democratic election after more than two decades of tumultuous rule by the U.S.-backed Lon Nol regime, the Khmer Rouge, and then a Vietnamese occupation force. It was a second chance for a country that had only gained independence from France in 1953, and a second chance for Sciaroni.

In 1987, at age 35, the American lawyer had seen his career very publicly blow up after a seemingly meteoritic rise to the Reagan White House. He had been hired as counsel for the President’s Intelligence Oversight Board, but his luck ran out when he became embroiled in the Iran-Contra Affair that rocked the last years of the Reagan administration. Thanks News - that Forbes link is very interesting.

My view - this was a public figure so i reckon the normal protocols about "death notice threads" does not apply.
Honest opinions and commentaries on his life's work is fair game. imo. including criticism.
That is the normal practice in respected publications the world over.

At the same time, i offer my respects to his family - and to himself, on a human level.
RIP.

Just had confirmation from someone who knows him very well, very saddened to hear that.

I knew him fairly well and used to enjoy a banter with him in Larry's from time to time.

RIP.

He was one of the big guy's personal lawyers or something, going way back. His law firm one of the most famous ones. Saw him many times around town but never chatted. He was always friendly and all smiles with staff.

Hi Rory, welcome - from just another member.

Perhaps you missed the "my view" and the "imo".
Perhaps you don't understand the difference between those deliberately inserted phrases from, "permission" and "direction".
Perhaps you missed that this was a "discussion forum"

A beloved man is dead. No one is interested in your view or opinion that “criticism” of him is appropriate because he’s a public figure.

Maybe people will criticize him but it’s bad form for you to try to whip up or green light that criticism right after his death is announced while his body is still at his villa.
