The country where Valentine's Day is the most dangerous day of the year

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

I cannot verify the statistics but plenty of studies have concluded that rape is a huge issue in Cambodia. Smoke and fire spring to mind.....

I agree with you hanno, however, this Washington Post article is sensationalist and misleading. When you check their sources, one of the studies quoted was carried out in Bangkok (
A quantitative study, conducted by Assumption University in Bangkok, stated that
one fifth of teenagers surveyed will have sex on Valentine's Day
), and the research done by Tong Soprach is misrepresented, whilst being extremely limited - 376 males from 15-24yo range, and rich kids only. He actually finds that Valentines Day is becoming less important to "young wealthy 15-24 year olds in Phnom Penh" and all his statistics (however flawed they may be) show that there is less, not more, irresponsible sexual behaviour amongst his target age group in 2014 compared to 2009. This article from the WP says almost the opposite and is unnecessarily alarmist :
He interviewed 715 Cambodians, aged 15 to 24, and what he found was staggering. In 2009, roughly two-thirds of young males said they were willing to force their partners to have sex on Valentine’s Day. That number dropped some by 2014, but was still alarmingly high: among 376 male respondents, about 47 percent.
But according to their research reference (http://soprach.com/wp-content/uploads/2 ... 14_eng.pdf), in 2014, 50% of young males said that if they could not have sex they would just hang out and have fun, and a further 33.3 % said they would try to seduce their girlfriend with a more expensive present. This last gesture equals "force" according to the WP journalist. Anyway, that makes 83% of young males in the survey that would be cool or would buy gifts to woo their girl. There is a further (pathetic) 13.6 % that would pretend to be locked out in the hope of having sex. Surprise - the total "percent" tally is way over 100.

Table 28: Comparison: If yes (young male and young male in couple will able to have sex), but if your
girlfriend/other/new girlfriend does not agree, what will you do on
the upcoming Valentine’s Day 2014?

All this to say that, while I do think there's a problem with sexual education and sexual violence in Cambodia, I'm shocked and surprised at the rubbish that is printed without editorial check. Shame on them for being so lazy. The study done by Tong Soprach makes interesting reading in itself, but it's far too rough and ready to draw any real conclusions. EVEN the Guardian (and I'm a longtime Guardian reader),referred to this study, as is, lifted more or less straight from the Phnom Penh Post. Shame on them all:
Nearly half of young Cambodian men are willing to force their partner into having sex this Valentine's Day, a study has found, stoking fears in a nation where perpetrators of sexual violence largely go unpunished...
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/f ... urvey-rape

Conclusion by western media, half of young Cambodian males were ready to date-rape on Valentine's day 2014. Get real. %)
There is a debate to be had about sexual violence in Cambodia, but this is just click-bait.

That is just a part of Cambodia. It doesn't mean Sex day or Rape day. Now look at another positive part. Here is Couple Run at Stadium from 3pm-8:30pm. Ticket 6$ , 50% to donate Kanthak Bopha hospital. :-)

I need some kikilu. Getting shot at would still be worth it right now.
