Teenage Mushroom Picker Killed by UXO and 3 Injured

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Cambodia News (Battambang): On May 5, 2020, at 9:20 am, an explosion of a B40 bomb killed a 15-year-old boy and injured three other people in Ouchrao village, Somlut district, Battambang.

Lieutenant Kor Sunkang, the Somlut inspector, said that a group of people walked into the forest looking for mushrooms to sell. Then, a boy named Luch Lyne, 15 years old, saw a bomb, and he picked it up and threw it on on the ground. The explosion killed the teenager immediately at the scene, and the other three people nearby got injured. The victims who got injured were identified as Sry Pich, a 16-year-old girl, Pen Vuth, a 25-year-old man, and Ny Bunath, a 14-year-old boy. They were all sent to the hospital for urgent treatment.

The explosion scene was a place where many local people go to pick mushrooms and wild plants, but it was a battlefield during the war, so there are still many bombs around there and it is harmful for people.
There is still not enough education to alert local people to the dangers of UXOs lying around in forests and fields in certain areas of Cambodia.

You're assuming that everyone is educated. Completely not the case. Unfortunately.
If you enjoy noise pollution and obnoxious driving practices, Phnom Penh is the place for you!

In this case it was a B40 rocket, a soviet made rocket.

Though in general I do share the sentiment. I guess they were still somewhat complicit in providing the circumstances and supporting Lon Nol.

So tragic. I would have thought that after all this time, villagers would be alert for UXOs, but this is the second CEO report in one week where a kid or teenager has played with a bomb that exploded.
newsworthy/12yo-throws-bomb-play-fight- ... 37759.html

Time for the authorities to get on to the commune chiefs and get them to send out some pictures and information on how to recognise UXOs and tell people to leave them well alone, since obviously these kids didn't know what a UXO looks like, or didn't realise how dangerous they are. :please:

Thank you Vietnam, seeing it is unlikely to be Khmer ordnance.

Blaming it on the US is pretty dumb in this case. It was a B40. There is pretty much zero "Khmer ordinance". This weapon was made in one of the former Soviet states or China.

There was a guy who used one of those huge Mark 82 bomb bodies as an anvil for about 30 years. Then one day it went off and they couldn't find enough pieces to bury.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
