Taking Cambodia's bogus election to task
Re: Taking Cambodia's bogus election to task
I understand what you're saying, but wouldn't what's good for them or not be up to them to decide through, in a normal world, a fair election process? They aren't given that opportunity, so change, good or bad, isn't even possible for them. Whether the opposition would've been any better remains to be seen, but there were enough citizens ready to vote that way to find out that this possibility was squashed.John Bingham wrote: ↑Fri Aug 03, 2018 11:21 pmOf course everyone deserves better, but do they know what's good for them? Many want some sort of change but that won't happen while traditional systems of patronage remain. It's a bit of a quandary.

in all fairness, many western democracies have a distinct lack of meaningful choice in parties and candidates. usa and australia spring to mind. politicians seem to be mostly sociopaths and narcissists.

Every country in the world deserves better...including Thailand, Australia, the US, UK etc.
For these countries to criticise Cambodia, given their history, and even their recent activities...simply laughable.
I notice that those criticising it here still choose to take advantage of the cheap food/liquor women, but ooohhh, let's criticise the politics to ease our fake liberal consciences.
Some of them are the same people that call protesters who decry the shooting of children and nurses in Gaza by IDF snipers anti-Semites

I'm not talking about "every country in the world". I'm talking about my friends in Cambodia. You're not even putting forth a decent argument. You'e just rambling about Israel, USA, etc., and making assumptions that everyone who wants a fair election process is secretly a drunken, mongerer, who's trying to take advantage of the place. Relax, dude. Not everyone who agrees with an article you don't is your cyber enemy.

Quite a varied range of excuses, deflections and attempted justifications in defence of a sham election and strong arm dictatorship.

And given their history in Cambodia, China's praise of the current election is equally laughable. Not to mention their recent activities.

The election in Zimbabwe has led to commentators once again asking " is Western Democracy`really as good an idea as its supporters claim".

This is correct, when I hear expats proclaiming the death of democracy in Cambodia and how the weasel and the CNRP was the last hope, I really wonder what would have happened if they were around and won. I think most foreigners would be on the way out, and not by choice. Racism begets racism.John Bingham wrote:What is really patronizing is when foreigners push their agendas while ignoring the bigger picture. A typical example of that is the way opposition party's vehement racism went largely unreported in foreign publications.

OK, fair enough, I was trying to make the point that few countries can/should criticise Cambodia if their history is taken into account.Gator wrote: ↑Sat Aug 04, 2018 5:49 am I'm not talking about "every country in the world". It was the sparkling water talking, apologies. I do feel strongly that Australia, for example, has no room to criticise, when their govt paid Cambodia to take brown refugees because they don't want more non-whites (but white saffer farmers, please come over). It's about consistency and checking their own record.
