Sweden warns they may rethink engagement with Cambodia
20 October 2017
Phnom Penh - Sweden said yesterday it would rethink its engagement with Cambodia if the opposition CNRP is dissolved, in the strongest warning yet from a Western aid donor. The government has filed a lawsuit to dissolve the party after charging its leader, Kem Sokha, with treason last month.
Swedish Human Rights Ambassador Annika Ben David told a news conference at the end of a five-day visit the banning of the opposition party could have consequences.
Ms David did not elaborate on what Sweden might do, but pointed out that Swedish fashion group H&M was an important buyer of clothes from Cambodia’s garment factories.
Sweden had given Cambodia an estimated $20 million per year in aid over the past five years. According to Cambodia’s database of donors, Sweden ranked third for aid among individual EU member states last year after France and Germany.

Not enough.
Lose $5M or leave the door open to lose an election?
They'll nail it shut first, recoup from the Chinese.
I think we have to engage these Cambodians with REAL IMPROVEMENTS instead of mostly fake NGO efforts just designed to fail and advance a very foreign agenda. These villagers are not as stupid as they allow you to think.
Why do we have to learn the hard way, like in Vietnam?
Truly engage them, set a long-term plan in place, set aside funds, and they might just buy into your system.
We're getting our butts kicked by China's quiet gold diplomacy.

Not if there's a fire, not even if you hear the sound of a thud from my home and one week later there's a smell coming from there that can only be a decaying human body and you have to hold a hanky to your face because the stench is so thick that you think you're going to faint.
Even then, don't come knocking...Not for ANY reason.

Re: Sweden warns they may rethink engagement with Cambodia
Interesting. While the Europeans are hinting about disengagement, Australia is actively strengthening ties with Cambodia. Something to do with finally getting rid of some of their refugees, according to this.

Australia strengthens ties with Cambodia as Sweden 'reconsiders engagement'
By South-East Asia correspondent Liam Cochrane
Posted October 20, 2017
Australia will begin holding regular high-level talks with senior members of the Cambodian Government, despite other countries rethinking their engagement with the increasingly authoritarian kingdom.
The agreement was signed on October 18 and the first talks will be in Cambodia "in the coming months".
"We look forward to exchanging views on our bilateral cooperation, including Australia's development program in Cambodia, two-way education ties, our defence cooperation program, as well as security and law enforcement engagement," Angela Corcoran, Australian Ambassador to Cambodia, said. "We will also use the senior officials' talks to discuss shared challenges, including transnational crime, irregular migration, and human rights."
The centrepiece of the diplomatic relationship is the $55 million refugee resettlement deal, which has seen a handful of refugees transferred from Nauru to Cambodia.

Australia blames Cambodia for 'unfortunate' champagne toast
October 27 2017 - 4:55AM
The Turnbull government has distanced itself from a toasting ceremony marking the upgrading of diplomatic ties with Cambodia, blaming officials in Phnom Penh for insisting on the clinking of champagne glasses.
Fairfax Media revealed last week that Australia's ambassador in Phnom Penh, Angela Corcoran, toasted the agreement with Cambodia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Prak Sokhonn at a time human rights groups are calling for punitive sanctions to be imposed on the regime in Phnom Penh over its ruthless dismantling of democracy...
