Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. I am not married. But I have seen couples harangue each other to exasperation, arguing over this detail or that.

Yet, when it comes down to it, I always saw the guy fork over the cash when the time came for it.

So, uh, what does that mean? ;p

Not if there's a fire, not even if you hear the sound of a thud from my home and one week later there's a smell coming from there that can only be a decaying human body and you have to hold a hanky to your face because the stench is so thick that you think you're going to faint.

Even then, don't come knocking...Not for ANY reason.

While there is truth in Bingham's allegations, it is doubtful that all Swedes were sympathetic to the Khmer Rouge Socialist experiment. In fact the leader of the small delegation, Mr. Bergstrõm recanted in 1979. For more information on this interesting period go to

Prime Minister Olaf Palme was very much in the socialist camp and often attacked US policy in Indochina. The first Westerners to visit Cambodia after the isolation of April 1975, was the Swedish ambassador in China, Kaj Björk, and Jan Lundvik from the State Department. The year was 1976, about a year after the takeover of power in Cambodia. Upon his return to Sweden Lundvik testified about the successful revolution and announced that they did not believe the data that it committed genocide in Cambodia. In an interview with Bosse Lindqvist radio documentary Silence of Phnom Penh (1999) Jan Lundvik explained the main purpose of this trip was to offer Swedish aid of five million to Cambodia.

One of his ministers, Brigitta Dahl headed the Swedish Committee for Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. In 1976, Dahl participated in a debate in Sveriges Radio about the situation in Cambodia, where she said among other things:
Everyone knows that much – or maybe even most – of what is now being said and written about Cambodia are lies and speculation.
It was completely necessary to evacuate Phnom Penh. It was necessary to rapidly start the production of provisions and it would require large sacrifices from the population.
But that's not what currently is our problem. The problem is that we really don't have knowledge, direct testimonies, in order to reject all lies that are spread by the enemies of Cambodia.

"Prime Minister Olaf Palme was very much in the socialist camp and often attacked US policy in Indochina."

Many Americans and other nationalities attacked US foreign policies in SE Asia, that in no way means they were Socialists. The Swedes are a well educated people and what was unknown or misrepresented then is clear to them today. Over 35 years have passed. I do not deny your facts, but they are history, not news. Give it a rest and find CURRENT grounds for criticism.

'Swedes arent gonna do shit."

What do you have to offer as proof of this emotive, but otherwise empty statement?

Sweden stops new aid
22 November 2017
Sweden said yesterday it was stopping new aid for Cambodia, except in education and research, and would no longer support a reform programme after the CNRP was dissolved last week.

The announcement marked the first concrete action by a European Union country in protest at the crackdown on the opposition.

The United States has already cut election funding and said it would take more punitive steps after last week’s court ruling. The European Union has also threatened action.

Sweden’s embassy in Phnom Penh said the country was reviewing its engagement with Cambodia.

“We will not initiate any new government-to-government development cooperation agreements, except in the areas of education and research,” it said in a statement.

Responding to the Swedish statement, Huy Vannak, undersecretary of state at the Interior Ministry, said Cambodia welcomed friendship with Sweden or other countries, but they must understand the CNRP had been banned because the courts found it had committed treason. “People should respect the Cambodian people’s decision in accordance with the principle of democracy and the rule of law,” he said.

Sweden, which has given Cambodia an estimated $20 million per year in aid in the past five years, ranked third among individual EU member states in Cambodia’s database of donors last year, after France and Germany.
