2 Suspected Drug Traffickers Arrested in Sihanoukville

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Latest word was absolutely a set-up. His friends now have the name of the ice-bitch that set him up (for cutting her off from free handouts of money and banning her from his apartment.) If anyone here knew Snowy(Dave) they would know that he doesn't do ice. You don't do Ice and be as mello, laid-back and quiet as Snowy. Drink beer, yes, ice no. Yes he, was an old/lonely fool for letting the ice-bitch's use him, but if being a fool was a crime we would all be in jail at one time or another. (He who is without guilt, cast the first stone, etc)

I have heard that if the cops have a senior citizen in custody that is sick, the cops have to pay for medical care (true/false?) Dave does have medical problems and I don't see him surviving jail and the harsh treatment of these corrupt cops for very long. I wonder if they really want a old harmless foreigner dying in custody? (maybe like Phnom Penh he will jump off the roof of the police station. Hands tied behind his back?)

I have contacted the US embassy and while they are useless sacks of sh*t, they will publish things of interest in their Warnings to US Travelers. I sent them an email to warn Americans that the police in Sihanoukville are using ice-whores to set up foreigners so the cops can extort money from them. Great for the tourist industry here. Not!

How does it concern the US Embassy? Isn't he British?
As for the tourist industry, I'm sure it will survive. I should hope that most tourists are aware of the dangers of entertaining drug addicts while on vacation.

Sailorman mentions them asking for a figure of 6k, if the guy turns round and says he only has 3k would they entertain that hypothetically, in that 3k is better than nothing and they get zero if he doesn't agree and goes to jail without paying anything. Just curious.

This might sound like banging on open doors but from what I have seen over the years, either as a spectator or while being involved helping the accused, it is sometimes possible to pay your way out at the very beginning while the district attorney is not yet involved. The amount being demanded is then at its highest. 6k doesn't sound much. I have seen ppl give around 10k+ to walk out of similar circumstances and much higher payments are not unheard of.
If the foreigner is already in pre-trial detention hence going to the jail, he will be asked to pay a lump payment of 300$ (sHV) to be in one of the jail VIP room (20 or so ppl instead of 50+).
From this point money can help only to reduce one's sentence as there must be a trial and non guilty verdict are very rare. One of the way to lighten the sentence is to pay to have the quantities involved reduced. I have seen cases where it went from several grams of ice to 0,1g together with several gs of heroin being reduced accordingly.
A last payment is usually made before the trial to ensure a jail term sentence deal. Exemple 3 years for the same kind of amount as in this case. The term is usually halved for good conduct and the prisoner stands with only a few weeks/months to go before being freed.
I have seen global costs involved through this route to be around of 5 to 10k including layer fees but excluding jail living costs.

Latest word today is that the Gendarmerie would think about turning this victim loose if a $20,000 donation was made to the local Gendarmerie's Widow's & Orphan's fund.

Thanks, I just got an email from the US Embassy in Phnom Penh today, probably because of your alerting them of the dangers in Sihanoukville:

TRAVEL WARNING:

Dear citizens,

If you are planning on visiting Cambodia, it is no longer advisable to allow clapped-out yama-head prostitutes (known as "taxi girls among expats) to hang out in your hotel room or guesthouse smoking ice. They may in fact tell you that they need money for their university fees or sick relatives, but they will just go and buy more ice to smoke in your place. However, if you are insane enough to give them money in the first place, you should never stop paying them. These Yama-Hos will then go to the police and set you up. And more importantly, you may end up with your very own thread about you on CEO where fellow expats discuss whether you smoke ice and hang out with Yama-Hos, or just drink and hang out with Yama-Hos. And if you do have to kick a crack head Yama-Ho out of your room, make sure she takes her drugs with her.
