Post by frank lee bent » Sat Jun 22, 2019 10:07 am

The building formerly known as The Powerhouse has collapsed in Sihanoukville burying a number of people with an unknown number of fatalities.

The original building was 2 stories and had 4 or 5 floors added to it recently.

It collapsed about 5 this morning.

Who approves adding 4-5 storeys to a two storey building? The Construction Department?

At the pagoda I visit they were adding a couple more floors to an existing building when I noticed last year that work had stopped. A few weeks ago I heard hammering again and assumed work had restarted, but the next day a bulldozer moved in and the entire construction has now been demolished. One of the monks told me the existing building wasn't strong enough to support it. Glad they found out before it was completed.

Wow that was one of the original expat places to stay long term. Did the Chinese do it or a greedy Khmer landlord?

Cambodian building collapse kills three, dozens feared buried
Rescuers dig through debris of seven-storey beach resort tower that was under construction in Sihanoukville

At least three people died when an under-construction building collapsed at a Cambodian beach resort early on Saturday, officials said, amid fears dozens more were left trapped in the rubble.

The seven-storey building in the beach town of Sihanoukville, collapsed with workers inside. The building is owned by a Chinese company.

“There are more than 30 people in the pile of debris from the building,” Information Minister Khieu Kanharith said in a Facebook post, citing witnesses.

He said all of the dead were Cambodian, including two workers and a translator.

The building belonged to a Chinese national, who rented the land from a Cambodian owner.
