7-Storey Building Collapses in Sihanoukville, Cambodia (Death Toll Rises)

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Chiang Rai gets lots of earthquakes.
The hills are the foothills of the Himalayas which are still growing.

Now I am confused, all the western propaganda was saying that the chinese were bringing their own workers over so that Khmer are not getting any jobs etc. and now only Khmer workers?

small projects that use lesser skill levels employ Khmer bricklayers and the like. modern steel frame buildings that form the bulk of development do not.
reporting of the facts hardly constitutes propaganda.

I see a lot of khmer construction workers on koh pich after 4pm and rarely any old fashioned brick houses around there. From my own observation 90percent are khmer and the upper ranks are chinese.

The building in question on this thread was brick and rebar, in Sihanoukville, not Koh Pich.

Some survivors were rescued from the rubble today.
Presumably the 4 people arrested today will actually be punished as this case has stirred up a great deal of resentment.

Majority of construction workers are khmers. Only couple projects in Sihanoukville use only Chinese workers. In Phnom Penh I believe well over 90% of workers are locals and even in Sihanoukville the number is over 70%. Reason why the number in Sihanoukville is lower is just the fact that there is not enough experienced construction workers there.

sydney is going through the hangover from the realestate boom with cracking up high rises

the greed factor is what drives it

owner pays for drawings that are produced to comply with building codes. gets inspector approval as all looks good on paper.

owner pays for 4 inch thick concrete slabs but builder pours 3 inch slabs & builder pays inspector to look the other way
owner pays for half inch diameter steel reinforcing but builder puts up 3/8" steel rods & builder pays inspector to look the other way
owner pays for copper plumbing but builder puts in galv plumbing & builder pays inspector to look the other way
etc etc etc

do it over muliple floors & theres a motser to be made. the more floors the more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ under the table

happens everywhere when demand outstrips supply & fast $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ are to be made
thru shit to more shit
