Death rises to 7 in deadly building collapse in Kep
The death toll in the collapse of the 7 seven story under construction building in Kep has risen to seven as of 4am today.

Rescuers pulled out three more bodies during the search and rescue efforts, currently being supervised by Prime Minister HE and aided by several heavy duty excavators to clear the debris as the search continued to look for more victims possibly trapped the wreck.

Kep Police Chief Pen Dara said that another 18 victims have been sent to hospital, also pulled from the debris and are undergoing treatment. Several were said to be in critical condition.

Up to 40 construction workers were living in the building, a practice banned since the deadly collapse of the Sihanoukville building last year.

Another building collapse - Kampot or Kep this time

Post by Kammekor »

Apparently another building collapsed last night which left several people dead. Just heard it on ABC radio (a radio station where listeners call in with news, usually they're spot on).

Looks like the Cambodian government is silent. Some info here:

Yes, my bad. Heard the new at 6am, hardly any info then on mobile sites, did a brief search here before posting but overlooked the items.

Anyway, RIP to the victims. It's sad and unnecessary.
Also puts construction in the KoW in a broader perspective. If you see one bug in the kitchen you expect more, but if you see two, you know for sure it's infested.

Further details: According to this article from the Guardian, the owners were intending to open a guesthouse in the building. The mind boggles.
An unknown number of workers remained trapped, [Kep governor] Satha said, adding that authorities had detained a Cambodian couple, the owners of the building, for questioning.

The couple had intended to build a guesthouse, Satha said.

The death toll has risen to nine victims. But the rescuers are still hoping to find some people alive under the rubble.

31 mins ago - BREAKING NEWS
Rescue operation continues as death toll rises to 9
Hundreds of rescue workers along with dozens of machineries today continue to comb the debris of the collapsed seven-storey building in Kep province’s Kep city to rescue more victims as death toll reportedly rose to nine.

Captain Lim Sam Oeun, commune police officer, said at the scene that more bodies are believed to be under the rubble, noting that about 40 workers had stayed in the building before it collapsed.

“There are several bodies under the debris but we cannot pull them out because we need to remove the debris first,” he said. “We believe that some victims are still alive. We need to find and rescue them first.”

“Many workers were staying here before yesterday’s collapse. Now we rescued two dozens workers and among them, 9 were found dead,” Cap Sam Oeun said.

made the bangkok post 10 dead,23 injured, been on Khmer fb all day

The couple had intended to build a guesthouse, Mr Satha said.
https://www.bangkokpost.com/world/18286 ... F5qIFWbV1g

Government is giving each dead persons family $50,000, injured $10,000

a sign of Cambodia that a dead worker will make more for his family by getting killed than working his whole life
But the loss of a dad, mom, son, daughter, brother, sister is priceless
