Stephen John Loryman Arrested for Purchasing Child Sex

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

It would be foolish for anyone to live with four children--not one's own. I can't speak to his guilt or innocence, his living situation reflects horrible judgement in and of itself.

Same here, I have supported four girls who are not my own offspring for the last 15 years. I either live with them,[ in Takhmau ] I'm not in a relationship with their mother, or they have lived with me in PP
The oldest who is now 19 , now lives with me full time ,with her own bedroom. Everyday I am open to being accused of something by somebody but I am not going to stop living my life and stop raising a family that I love and treat as if they are my own daughters.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

The ASEAN International School say that he stopped working there almost 2 weeks ago. He told them he was returning to the UK to help his family. They also say that they had "no idea of his personal life out of work". They don't know when his wife left Cambodia.

Agreed. Especially in Cambodia. Even if you have no sexual interest in children whatsoever, you're still opening yourself up to all sorts of potential accusations. It would be very easy for someone who you happen to have gotten on the wrong side of to start making very serious problems for you. Personally I'd stay well clear.

We raised a lovely girl when Ken and I were in Cambodia, from the time she was nine or so up to seventeen. Her mother was there too, however, and it was a huge villa.

That said, I've seen accusations both true and false occur in the KOW. Not the best idea to set yourself with for people desperate for money. Sorry to have offended any of you with this observation. I know most of you are fine people who would never commit this horrendous crime.

Perhaps someone can explain this, if the age of consent is 14, and then he gets charged with sex acts with a minor under 15, isn't the law still based around the age of 18 for foreigners involved with Khmer male or female? Wouldn't he still be in deep shit unless they were all 18+? It seems really complicated, why don't they just say sex acts with a minor? Or would they not throw the book at the guy if the kids were 16? I was under the impression that all foreigners are subject to the laws of their home countries in these situations?

An article is today's Phnom Penh Post says that APLE tipped off the cops.

It also says that he will be charged by the court today.

British man sent to PP court over paedophilia

Anti-human trafficking and juvenile protection police on Wednesday sent a British national to court for alleged paedophilia in Phnom Penh.

Lov Lin, the child protection bureau chief at the Ministry of Interior, said Stephen John Loryman, 57, was an English teacher at a private school.

According to the National Police website, Loryman brought four underage boys into his home in Chhbar Ampov district on Sunday.

Acting on a tip-off, police raided Loryman’s house after receiving a search warrant and found the four boys before arresting the suspect and seizing some electronic devices as evidence.

Lin said police had followed the suspect after receiving complaints from the boys’ families and a tip-off from APLE, a child protection NGO.

He added that the suspect had lured the boys by giving them money, mobile phones, clothes, food, stationery and bicycles.

Phnom Penh Municipal Court deputy prosecutor Kol Bon said on Thursday that Loryman will be charged today.

APLE programme director Khoem Vando said it had cooperated with police on the case.

“We had provided information for police to investigate. According to our sources, the suspect had had a relationship with the victims for around five months,” he said.

Vando urged the court to punish Loryman according to the law to prevent a repeat of the offence.

“I think [Loryman] is a risk to children. He had lured children in the community [with money] so he could sexually harass them,” he said.
