I get a Tall (12oz) brewed coffee for <$2 & then a 50 cent refill. If you join their club refills are free. Their coffee is good. Not the best, but good.

Now you're talking AD, time to open a PP franchise of an old school Vienna Kaffehaus like Café Central. If not sure that the coffee will be better than Starbucks, but everything else will be infinitely better. Make sure you kidnap a couple Austrian pastry chefs while you're at it.

I really thought Cambodian expats had more refined taste than this-getting excited about Starbucks
people you can do much better than this
Burned Beans — The Shame of Starbucks
Most fine coffee beans should be medium roasted. Junk beans are often burned, because, once you burn the beans, you can no longer tell what sort of quality they might have had if they had been properly roasted. The fact is, all burned beans taste the same: burned and bitter. Starbucks coffee is burned and bitter. You can tell when beans are burned because they take on a black color. We can only assume that Starbucks starts with the worst possible beans. After all, burning better beans is just a waste of money.

That's true to certain extent. I used to mix an Indonesian medium body beans with a French or Italian Roast. They're a fucking business - their customers tell them what they want. It shows that American Starbuck patrons like dark roast not that Starbucks likes dark roast. I can't believe that I'm sticking up for these guys as back in California, I'd go out of my way to avoid them if I could.obelisks wrote:I really thought Cambodian expats had more refined taste than this-getting excited about Starbucks

Re: Starbucks is Finally Coming to the Kingdom of Cambodia!
they started out as roaster disciples of peet's in SF.
always burnt to cut through the milk that ppl insist on ruining good coffee with.
a little beyond first crack is all it needs- never 2nd crack.
the cafe operation came much later with the company against stiff resistance of the board.
they came around when one of the partners went solo with enormous success.
cambodia coffee culture is exploding, and good beans here too.
starbucks could be a boon to local growers of they work the corporate responsibility angle.

I like Starbucks, not the best coffee in the world for sure, but not the worst either. It's a pretty consistent experience everywhere in the world (and in China it was the best coffee in town for a long time - Pacific Coffee's ordinary coffee used to have so much caffeine that I thought I'd end up with coronary as my heart rate pushed blood out of my eyes and ears). They also, normally, sell sausage rolls - particularly if they're part of the Chinese group. Which is awesome.

Brown is ok, better coffee and they have occupied the aspirational ground effectively
