Honestly, I don't see the problem.
Hugh Hefner's story is also full of cracks.

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

What is the end result? Do we have any idea besides the claims of SMF, AFESIP and Kristof? How many adult women have been taken against their will and sent to Cambodian prison camps because of her anti-prostitution work done under the guise of 'rescue'? And how many adults were put into her centers against there will and counted as 'rescued' and 'educated' in her stats? And how much money donated to save children from sex work has been misdirected into what amounts to a vice operation against adult women? Pisses me off every time I see a child beggar on the riverfront or in an intersection, living on the street, perhaps trafficked there, exposed to exploitation by sex predators, knowing that there are millions of dollars being donated to free non-existent prepubescent child slaves from non-existent child brothels that are instead being directed into a Christian/feminist anti-prostitution crusade and pay Somaly and SMF bigwigs hundreds of thousands of dollars. And to what degree have SMF/AFESIP programs been misdesigned and funds improperly allocated based on fantasy numbers and misunderstandings of the nature of the problems, born of Somaly's lies and Kristof's spin? If they are collecting funds and enacting programs based on 15,000 child sex workers when there are only really a few hundred, where has all the money been going? No doubt her organizations have helped some girls and women escape the sex trade and learn alternative skills, but at what cost? How much could have really been done to help real children and women had the resources not been directed into ulterior agendas and flawed programs? And given their lack of transparency and willingness to fudge the details, how can we ever find out?phuketrichard wrote:how many brought into her scam an gave thinking it was a worthy cause ( the cause is worthy but...)

The question is not 'does the good she did balance against the lies she told,' but how much did her lies (and the rotten system they represent) cost real children and women in real need here.

Non-existent child brothels? Really? Just because they are not as in-your-face as the K11 days doesn't mean they are gone completely....just gone from view, and maybe gone for barang customers. There have been plenty of undercover videos showing young children being offered for sex in brothels. Are you insinuating the videos are fake, or the problem has completely disappeared since those videos were taken? Dusting off the overused word "porn" for effect is getting old. "Poverty porn". "Sex trafficking porn".
Somaly Mam may be a fraudster or a saint. I have no idea where the donated money goes. Anywhere there is money there will corruption. But to say the problem in question barely exists is highly dubious.

But they advised against having the documentary focus on Mam due to AFESIP’s lack of understanding of the sex industry. In an interview for Euronews in 2012, Mam said girls as young as 3 are being held in Cambodian brothels. Experts in the field say that is almost unheard-of. Patrick Stayton, who formerly ran the Christian, faith-based International Justice Mission (IJM) in Cambodia, says, “They may have had a supply of younger girls between the age of 14 and 17,†but adds, “We’ve never seen prepubescent girls, or very, very rarely.â€
