Phnom Penh Skytrain in the pipeline...

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

I know that light rail system, it's rubbish - cheap alternative to a working monorail system.
In Sydney they ripped out the monorail because it was only a tourist toy and didn't go anywhere useful. Now they are laying light rail tracks down George Street, and it's taking forever because they have to relocate all the underground cables and pipes first. They would have been better off rerouting the monorail so it ran from Circular Quay to Central station (or building a new one, it was getting a bit decrepit). Going to take as long to build that line as it did to put that MRT line in through the middle of Bukit Bintang in KL.

As for here the buses are ok and well patronised, but a skytrain/light rail or monorail would be better. The train to the airport is a waste of time at street level. Too slow and inconvenient.

Yep, there is also monorail thats been operating on the Gold Coast for the last 25years and I think there has only been one accident in all that time.

stations stops can be inside highrise commercial buildings.

That all sounds great in theory, just build giant pillars above the existing buildings, In reality it doesn't work like that, they have to carve out everything underneath and the whole neighborhood gets decimated.

What building are you talking about. If a skytrain was built following and above the roads there are no building to worry about . Have you never looked under a flyover. Perhaps your talking about your homeless mates and squatters.

It's the only viable option, I just hope tuk-tuk drivers don't loiter or sleep on the rail.

Green = Monivong Line
Dark Green = Monireth Line
Red = Sihanouk Line
Dark Blue = Airport Line

Where the Green, Dark Green and Airport Lines meet is Phsar Thmei. Below that is Wat Koh, below that is Vimean Thip, below that Boeung Keng Kong, then Bokor, then Boeung Trabek.
Most of it is not really clear, but that will give you an idea.

The light green colour line going north-south looks like it goes from the Japanese bridge roundabout straight down Monivong to the Monivong bridge.
The dark green line goes from Psar Thmei to Steung Manchey, down CDG/217.
The thin black line goes from PT to the airport, up Russian Blvd.
The thin blue horseshoe line goes from Calmette to BKK1, going west from Calmette to Toul Kok and then south to Mao Tse Tung.
The red line goes from Olympic Stadium east to Independence Monument, and then north to Psat Chas via Royal Palace. Then curves east to the train station.

Apologies in advance for any errors.

So the red line will run up Sisowath Quay/Riverside? Will ruin the ambience a bit for tourists! Better for it to run up Norodom?

I think it would go up Sothearos. Then north of 154 it would have to follow Riverside to the Night Market where it would turn left and follow 108.

If the project proceeds, they will probably start with just one line and I would guess that would be the Monivong line.
