Six Cambodians arrested after beating Turkish national UFUK ÖNTÜRK, 53, to death for hammer attack

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

I find the drunk khmers killing a foreigner more likely than a foreigner hitting a grandma with a hammer, unless he has a history of mental illness...
Why? What is it that makes all the eyewitnesses, accused, and local reports of jackass behaviour on the part of Ufuk, that makes the villagers immediately incredible (in the literal sense)? Why is Ufuk so trustworthy and innocent?

It seems things escalated too fast in this case, which is not a real surprise given the area
Perhaps you are right, but in the heat of the moment of a crazed drunk swinging a hammer at all directions (already after he almost drops an ashtray on the kids head), I'm not surprised they got carried away.

They should get off at best (they may be quietly released when this all dies down), light manslaughter charges at most.
Sure, if they told the truth.

Unfortunately the guy they taught a lesson can not tell his side of the story. Glad I am not a judge

Not all barangs in Cambodia are rich expats.
Are people from Türkiye even "barangs"? How white and/or Western do you have to be to be considered a "barang"?

I realize that I should ask my Khmer friends this question instead, but since I'm currently in Yuon Country, I'll give it a shot here lol.
I was under the impression that "barang" means any foreigner but I could have misunderstood or have been misinformed. Which foreigners are not barangs?
Barang means FRENCH especially as language (and not english as i thaught before) and for the people it means a white tall guy with a big noose (no joking). Chinese or Indians are not barang, Turkishis a good question, i agree they would be called ARAB. And Africans are not Barang either, probably they have an other special word for that, i remember in Phuket three years back they called them "chocolat-men" !!
They were calling them that when i was there 20 ywars ago. I had a mate with me who was black and a girl politely refused him with the line - no boom boom chocolate lover.

When situations appear to escalate quickly here it's usually because they have been simmering for a long time unrecognised.

Don't know about you guys, but I always ensure I keep a large hammer amongst my luggage essentials when travelling around the KOW.

You wouldn't believe how many times it's been useful.

I would add insults / (perceived) losing face, jealousy (love affairs) and intoxication as other main causes for fast escalations with a bad ending.

Khmer ladies especially when intoxicated get very loud and close while swinging their hands right in your face.

If you are not used to this or very good at keeping your calm its easy to feel that something bad is going to happen which makes you feel that you have to defend yourself. And as soon as you only rise your hand back at this women you can be sure that all the men will come to woop your ass feeling entitled to do so as you just showed aggression yourself (in their view).

Sad and its a situation many of us have or will be in so always remember to keep your calm. The womens irradical in your face behaviour is their display of power but they most likely wont hit you unless you do it first.

Guess this is the guy. He got several profiles on facebook and several of them as living in Cambodia.

Here is a Turskish article about it. They say that they wanted the corpse to be released and taken back home to follow their believes rather then Buddhist believes but Cambodia wont release it unless they get 10.000$.

Are there not at least two or three mosques in every province in Cambodia? If they don't want him buried according to Buddhist rights, why then not give custody of his body to the one of them (and it's not even like it's all Chamic, Folkloric Islam: the nearby AlSerkal Mosque is in the orthodox Islamic tradition).

Perhaps a Muslim here could contact the mosque on his behalf?

The most amazing thing about this thread is there are morons who actually believe the garbage printed in the Khmer Times
