yes you could get away with calling a bar girl a butterfly but i wouldnt say it to a "normal" girl incase she found it insulting whether she engages in sex or not i can imagine it being rather offensive!Samouth wrote:Yes definitely it is more insulting for a woman than a man, because it khmer society woman is considered as white paper. For a man, it is a not a big deal.Anchor Moy wrote:This is where you have to be so careful using another language - especially making jokes. You have to judge how sensitive certain words can be. Could be funny, but don't want to offend anyone by mistake.
Nice. It is good that you didn't say it directly to someone.yeah i gathered that thanks samouth thanks, i actually used it in a sentence today and it worked so thumbs up for you but as AM said, i wasnt saying it directly about someone and/or to that person, how offended would the person be if you was to describe them as a srey/pros sava?? i know if you call someone a butterfly it is more of a playful insult, is this the same?

Yes definitely. I think bar girls also don't find it offensive calling her srey Sava. I can guarantee that all of normal girls will find it offensive if someone call her srey sava. BTW, the way that bar girls interact to you guys also completely different from what the normal girl does.Normally girls would not call you with Ah, but bar girls do all the time.Jamie_Lambo wrote:yes you could get away with calling a bar girl a butterfly but i wouldnt say it to a "normal" girl incase she found it insulting whether she engages in sex or not i can imagine it being rather offensive!Samouth wrote:Yes definitely it is more insulting for a woman than a man, because it khmer society woman is considered as white paper. Butterfly in Khmer's opinion refer to women who use their beauty to attract men and fly from one man to another man. Why no bar boys or male butterfly ? this society is unfair .

No no, she couldn't possibly be in a loveless marriage and fell for a sweet-talking asshole. No no, she must be a slut. You people disgust me.

I never heard anyone call men that butterflies. I don't know any bar gir or bar boy. Just wonder why women are called by bad words.Therapist wrote:You are right, but men are called butterflies too, at least in Thailand.prahkeitouj wrote:Butterfly in Khmer's opinion refer to women who use their beauty to attract men and fly from one man to another man. I agree that it is a double standard and it’s not fair. In the West and in some north east asian countries there is greater push for equality between the sexes and including which words are used.prahkeitouj wrote: I never heard anyone call men that butterflies. Now, in some American universities professors have to ask what pronoun the students wish to be called and there is a push to find gender neutral pronouns instead of he or she. Personally, I don’t understand what’s going on over there in American anymore, but gender equality is important in Cambodia and I realize things are unfair.
However, maybe because you and your generation know it is not fair, you and your generation will be able to change things in Cambodian society in the future?
If it makes you feel better you can call me butterfly although I am not one; I am a moth.

Little salary, for the same behaviour women are judged differently from men because it is the men who decide what is acceptable in most societies. If it was the women who decided what is or is not acceptable, then things would be diffferent.prahkeitouj wrote:[

Whatever, I personally don't think that it is ok to call any woman names because she chooses to sleep with whoever. I don't think that is any of my business.
But as I said before, I think that " butterfly" has a different meaning in Khmer than English. In English it's not so bad.
