Silencing critics with lawsuits.
Re: Silencing critics with lawsuits.
Ha! My money would be on John Bingham in any Khmer history debate.
Money is human happiness in the abstract; he, then, who is no longer capable of enjoying human happiness in the concrete devotes himself utterly to money.

Mine wouldn't. He's far to eager to please the powers that be. The Khmer have a massive problem with that already. They don't need another sicophant. Especially a foreigner. A question came up in one of the books today whilst teaching the verb " to Declare". When was the last time your country declared war on another country?
Anyone care to answer that in relation to Cambodia? My student couldn't. Something Americans would find piss easy. They may have a problem with which one was last though.

UPDATE: Bail was denied by the court today.CEOCambodiaNews wrote: ↑Sat Jun 10, 2017 11:57 pm Kem Sok Prosecuted

Phnom Penh (FN), June 9 - Kem Som was tried in Supreme Court Friday morning.
He was arrested on February under allegations of incitement and public defamation, which are punishable under Articles 305, 494, and 495 of the Criminal Code.
The premier is demanding $500,000 from Kem Sok for accusing the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) of murdering Kem Ley, according to the premier’s lawyer Ky Tech.
Kem Sok is also facing an additional suit for defamation. That lawsuit is seeking an additional $2,500, according to Ky Tech.
The second lawsuit was filed after a statement Kem Sok made during a live radio station on Feb. 13 in which he said, "This refers to the system … a system under this government to murder people in which the murderer is never to be found including Kem Ley and other activists ….”

Analyst Kim Sok's bail request denied at Supreme Court
10 January 2018
- Sok was arrested in February last year on charges of defamation and incitement for suggesting that Prime Minister HE’s ruling party was behind the brazen daylight murder of popular political analyst Kem Ley. He was convicted in August of "incitement" and defamation, but was seeking release on bail pending the exhaustion of his appeal, which is currently before the Supreme Court.
“I filed the [bail request] to the Supreme Court because it is an injustice; also Prime Minister HE has been using his power and his officials to put me in a dark prison,” Sok said.
He alleged his rights had been violated in prison, namely that he had received beatings and death threats, and said if released he would not flee but would gather evidence to challenge his conviction.
Presiding Judge Kim Sothavy decided to uphold the municipal and Appeal Court decisions, citing legal “procedures”, and adding “the request for bail is unimportant because the court has already sentenced him to 18 months”.

America doesn't declare war anymore, neither do most of the devloped nations. they just invade. Exactly the sort of behaviour the Americans complained about in Pearl harbour. Thy Sovantha threatens new suit
26 January 2018
Social media celebrity and card-carrying CPP member Thy Sovantha yesterday said she will file a lawsuit against wildlife NGO head Suwanna Gauntlett alleging discrimination after the latter allegedly denied her access to an ecotourism program the group is launching today in Koh Kong province.
The threat is the latest in a long line of lawsuits filed or threatened by Sovantha, who was once an opposition darling for her social media campaign that aided the CNRP’s surprising electoral gains in 2013. In recent years, however, she turned on the opposition, and has instead cosied up to Prime Minister HE and his Cambodian People’s Party.
The social media celebrity’s penchant for filing lawsuits has seen her sue former CNRP President Kem Sokha for disparaging her in a leaked private phone call, two opposition activists for questioning the attendance at one of her NGO events, and ex-opposition leader Sam Rainsy for claiming she took $1 million from the premier to fund anti-opposition activities – an accusation based on leaked text logs, purportedly between her and HE.
Following the CNRP’s dissolution in November, Sovantha even threatened to sue the CNRP’s more than 5,000 elected officials as accomplices to an alleged treasonous plot.
Sovantha’s grouse with Gauntlett stems from her intentions to join a group of youth that were invited by Wildlife Alliance to experience an ecotourism project and camping location in Koh Kong’s Areng Valley, with the trip starting today...

Re: Silencing critics with lawsuits.
more recently the US had been "asked" to help by a lot of countries. Thats even better. At times it looks as if the whole world is begging for assistance from the land of the free.pczz wrote: ↑Wed Jan 10, 2018 10:59 pmAmerica doesn't declare war anymore, neither do most of the devloped nations. they just invade. Can you list these countries?
What does 'a lot' mean? 2? 3?

Anf the Chinese and Russians seem to get quite a few requests too. We are back in the old game of proxy wars, supporting 1 dictator to stop a worse one. It rarely worksOKW wrote: ↑Sat Jan 27, 2018 9:50 ammore recently the US had been "asked" to help by a lot of countries. Thats even better. Re: Silencing critics with lawsuits.
Late Obama administration introduced that strategy after it became more and more difficult to sell one war after another to the general public. Look up the "requests" made, it just has a better learning effect, as in retaining the info.that genius wrote: ↑Sat Jan 27, 2018 9:56 am Can you list these countries?
