Sihanoukville: Locals Criticize the Monolingual Banners

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

However though, instead of getting angry, I find it better to become interested in the language like going shopping. See something new and learn what it is. It's what got me interested in foreign languages in the first place.

By the way, if anyone wants to go on a Russian excursion or get a taxi from these guys, let me know how it goes.
asian-english is one of my most favourite things in the world, me and my mates always send photos to each other of signs and stuff written in Asian-English, some can be innocent grammer/spelling mistakes whilst others are just absolute comedy gold...

Surprisingly, this is the first time in agree with the flying chicken on anything (I thought he was banned?). Signage should be in Khmer or both languages if you want to have a sign in a different language to attract foreign patrons. It's not asking for much...

I don't get it.

You're saying the Roman script was mandated because of what Vietnam/Thailand/ Laos wanted?

Wtf in Thaialnd/laos/Vietnam has any idea where Kampong Whatever is?

And most of them can't read English anyway, I think most Thais would find Khmer easier to read.

Agreed. I wouldn't want to see my hometown with shop signs in some other language without English as well.

Agree with the chicken.

Just to add. Sometimes just because GONK thinks so, does not mean it is true.

Khmer first, respect!
In Wales for example sign are in English and Welsh , depending where you are. Welsh above in the north and below in the south . By law.

Compliance with the Khmer language signage rule seems to be patchy in PP. Many new shops and bars are signed only in English, or have small font for the Khmer wording. Especially the new places on 172 and 174. I imagine sooner or later there will be a bit of a crackdown.
