Sihanoukville Governor Dismantles Chinese Billboard Advertising Women and Gambling

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Sihanoukville Cambodia News: On November 21, 2018, Mr. Yun Min, the governor of Sihanoukville, ordered the city administration to dismantle an advertising board for Kwang Tung City Entertainment on National road 4, near Otres pagoda, Sihanoukville.

The reason for the removal of the billboard is not explicit, but the order for the dismantlement took place after a lot of criticism by the locals; presumably it was the proximity to the pagoda which attracted strong local criticism. After receiving the order, the administration officer went to dismantle the advertising board immediately.
Gambling and women are not a problem per se in the casino town, and are in fact encouraged for foreign visitors, but Sihanoukville authorities are prompt to crack down on any unseemly advertising which may upset local residents.

Good, I hope it's the tip of the iceberg. Not much Western signs left now!

Heard that the Chinese government want to change the word BillBoard to XiBoard to allow Chinese ads in Shitsville.

All becomes clear. Google Translate is to blame say the billboard writers. There also seems to be some geographical confusion as to whether Sihanoukville is a province of Cambodia or China.

November 27, 2018
Governor orders removal of billboard
Mass confusion over a Chinese-Khmer billboard advertisement on National Road 4 in Preah Sihanouk province has prompted Provincial Governor Yun Min to order its removal.

The advertisement, written in both Khmer and Mandarin, said “Guangdong – City of Entertainment and Chang’an hotel”, referring to two provinces in China.

The billboard advertisement was captured and shared on Facebook, garnering confusion and misinterpretation among Cambodian Facebook users. Many on the social media platform speculated that the billboard was a precursor to a Chinese province being established in Cambodia.

“We have to take it down. Otherwise, foreign tourists will get confused thinking that this is a Chinese province in Cambodia,” Mr Min said. “The company who put up the billboard advertisement was Chinese. I ask that the authorities question them and educate them about this issue.”

Mr Min also ordered authorities to take down all misleading signs written in the Chinese and Khmer languages.

“Lately, I have seen many banners, billboards and signboards written in Khmer and Chinese – using the names of Chinese areas, while some consisted of Khmer spelling errors,” he said. “I understand that there’s public concern and criticism, but I call for understanding because there are many Chinese investors here.”

Det No, director of the provincial fine arts department, yesterday said he was tasked by authorities to remove about 100 banners and signboards with spelling errors during the last three months.

Mr No said the banners he removed were shipped from overseas or transported from other provinces for use in Preah Sihanouk.

“We questioned the designers and they said they had used Google to translate from Chinese to Khmer,” he said.

Sihanoukville authorities take down signs in bad Khmer
27 November 2018
Sihanoukville municipal authorities pulled down shop banners at 200 locations for having spelling errors, no thanks to Google Translate.

Lim Pheaktrey, a Preah Sihanouk municipal administration official in charge of public administration and environment, told The Post on Monday that the spelling errors were caused by literal translations to Khmer using Google Translate as shop owners made their banners independently.

He said the authorities also have a problem because there is only one official in charge of checking banners in Sihanoukville.
“There are also loopholes in our inspection [process] because there is only one official who is in charge of checking the banners and he cannot carry out his function thoroughly. Therefore, people should inform the authorities wherever they spot such errors,” Pheaktrey said.

Quote,, because there is only one official who is in charge of checking the banners and he cannot carry out his function thoroughly.

Surely the governor or whoever is in charge has a relative that could be promoted to help with these inspections.
