Sihanoukville's trash crisis creates headaches for the local authorities, as residents continue to complain about the garbage piling up.

Wonder of wonders.

Sihanoukville slashes trash collection cost
7 December 2017
- Sihanoukville residents are benefiting from cheaper rubbish collections after Preah Sihanouk province changed the price of waste disposal services amid complaints it was too expensive.
The company Cintri pulled out of collecting trash in Sihanoukville in September, citing unsustainable losses. Now the firm KSWM is providing the service instead.

Preah Sihanouk Governor Y Sokleng announced the new pricing structure on Monday and said it had been agreed on by the authorities, residents and the company. “Some residents disagreed with the previous price, but all have agreed on the new price,” he said.

Collections from private homes will now cost between 4,000 and 10,000 riel ($1-$2.50) per month, while businesses will pay from 12,000 to 40,000 riel ($3-$10).

KSWM director Nuon Visoth said the price has changed three times since the firm took up the contract. He said the bottom price for collections used to be 10,000 riel, but now starts from 4,000 riel.

“Businesses are able to pay more but we cut the cost to residents to make it 4,000 riel and up. It is a low price that the residents can accept,” he said. He added the company has 16 trucks and 70 workers to collect rubbish every day.

“In one day we collect 3,000 tonnes of rubbish in this tourist destination province,” he said.
