Sihanoukville: Police have arrested 2 foreigners, Leila Da Cunha Soares from Wigan, England and Julio Xavier Soares Martins from Santa Comba Dão, Portugal for the robbery of Christopher Black in Siem Reap on May 13 earlier this month.



Authorities said they received a complaint from the victim, 28 year old British national Chris Black claiming they stole money and passoports. They started an investigation and were finally able to arrest the suspects on the island of Koh Rong.

According to their Facebook accounts of these partners in crime, Julio Soares Martins and Leila Da Cunha Soares are cousins.

Julio Soares Martins also says he works at Downtown Siem Reap Hostel, one of the more popular backpacker spots with a pool and dorm beds as cheap as $4 a night, attracting the sophisticated clientele west of the Mekong.

They were arrested for a robbery that occured on May 13, 2016, but were arrested on May 19, 2016 on the island of Koh Rong. The victim appears to be 28 year old Chris Black from the UK who is a part owner and operator of Bong's Guesthouse on Koh Rong Island. This might be one of the rare instances in Cambodia where the word 'bong' refers to a smoking device as opposed to the Khmer meaning of the word, "younger brother."

It is not clear why they would have robbed a guesthouse owner on Koh Rong earlier this month in Siem Reap, but stranger robberies have happened in Siem Reap among expats.

The thieving duo have been sent to court for further legal proceedings.

I don't quite get the timeline though - JSM and LDS were working in Downtown Hostel in Siem Reap. They stole the stuff in SR but were arrested in Koh Wrong? Chris Black is described as owner/manager of Bongs GH on Koh Rong. What's not clear is whether he was in SR or KW when he got robbed. Why would you rob someone in Siem Reap and then turn up in Koh Rong? Or was it just bad luck for the couple that they ran into the victim on Koh Rong who then called the police
