Shocking Fishermen Detained in Ratanakkiri Conservation Area
Authorities detained two men for fishing in a protected area
June 27, 2019
Ratanakiri: On June 26, 2019, at 5:10 pm, along the river at the boundary of the Conservation Areas of Anloung, Koh Sampov, the Inspectorate of the local community force reported that they have arrested and detained two illegal fishermen.
The local guards found the two men using electric shock material to kill fish in a protected area. The electricity in the water stuns the fish, making them easy pickings. This type of fishing is illegal but widely practiced by locals. The men were caught red-handed with a battery and shock-fishing material, and other gear was said to be somewhere up the river and was not recovered.
The two fishermen are identified as Phang Lorn, male, 22 years old, and Keo Thnith, male, 19 years old, both residing in Sro Pok Chey village, Sre Pok commune, Rattanakiri province.
After the incident, the two poachers and the evidence were taken to the Inspectorate to proceed with the case against the them.
