Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): After receiving information on 4 November 2020 that the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade has tested positive for Covid-19 in Thailand, following a visit to Cambodia where he met the Cambodian Prime Minister, the Cambodian medical team has tested HE, his wife, and also 18 bodyguards and members of staff.
The tests were immediately dispatched to the Pasteur Institute for examination, and all twenty tests are reported to be negative. However, the Cambodian Prime Minister, on the advice of his medical team, will self-isolate for 14 days in order to safeguard his health and the health of others.

Statement from HE the Cambodian Prime Minister today:
Even though I have tested negative for Covid-19, for the safety of all, the doctors required me to live separately for 14 days, even apart from my wife, children and grandchildren.

I apologize to the King and Queen Mother for not being able to accompany them from The People's Republic of China and because I will be unable to assist in the celebration of Independence Day on 9 November.

I apologize to my compatriots in Pursat, Battambang and Banteay Meanchey for not being able to participate in the rice distribution to those in need, but I will send a representative to distribute the rice in my place.

Please postpone the opening day for the construction of 38 roads in Siem Reap, which is scheduled for November 16, 2020.

I apologize to the Heads of State, Heads of Government of ASEAN and all relevant partners for not being able to attend the meeting in person, but I will appoint representatives from 12 to 15 November 2020.

Despite being absent from my office as required by the doctor for 14 days of isolation, I can still fulfill my work by reviewing and signing the documents of the Royal Government at home. Members of the Royal Government, provincial governors and commanders of the armed forces can still report to me or ask for my opinion.

I can still exercise, including golf in the yard, just with no one around me. This is the best way to keep everyone safe and healthy. I would like to thank my compatriots, both inside and outside the country, who are concerned about my health and wish me well.

I wonder if the Hungarian minister was tested before he left home? Many foreign diplomats/govt staff don't seem to think they are required to test. US embassy staff, iirc?

Well, that was all treated transparently, with the information made public very rapidly. :hattip:

After all, a lot of heads of state have either had covid or been confined, so it's not a big deal in itself. But, I do wish they would heed their own advice to the population and stop shaking hands. And they could wear a mask in presence of diplomats arriving from covid hotspots such as Europe or the US. (And maybe those diplomats shouldn't be flying around the globe right now ? )

Given that reliable tests with results in less than an hour are now available, it is amazing that governments worldwide haven't got a stash of them and test everyone who gets anywhere near their leaders.

If this Hungarian was infected before he arrived, and was allowed in untested, it is a big security hole. Or maybe he got it here? And why did he get tested in Thailand, as he felling a bit rough?

More questions than answers in these news reports.

Diplomats aren't exempt from getting tested upon arrival in Thailand.

What have they actually done? I think luck played quite a role here.

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Encouraged masks and hand sanitizing, applied border controls, closed entertainment venues and schools.
