Search On for Missing Woman AMELIA BAMBRIDGE on Koh Rong, Cambodia (RIP)

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

It is indelicate to report that a body has been found without proof at this stage. The family will be desperate for any information, so please try not to post rumors from facebook unless there is some backup information.

There used to be a theme on an almost defunct Cambodian forum "What could go wrong in Koh Rong?" It wasn't just some random joke, that island has had some very ominous events over the years. Lots of unexplained deaths, just don't ever go there. I hope she is found safe, it's easy to get lost in jungle and I hope she is good.

Yes, it's a big island full of bush, so I'm hoping she has fallen and twisted an ankle or something, and that rescuers will find her eventually.

News in Cambodia is often hit and miss, but it's a terrible thing to post false information when there is an on-going search for a missing person, who is presumed to be still alive. Stay positive.

I'm not sure what to make of these places, just bandit country worth avoiding.
One week after the attack, two foreigners, 49-year-old Finnish national Jouni Niemi and 26-year-old Canadian national Michael Hay, are in a Phnom Penh hospital. Four suspects – Vann Sihavorn, 22, Chup Tith, 27, Khoun Hun, 24 and Choem Ratana, 27 – are in jail here. The jailed suspects claim they are innocent.

“We have enough evidence before we decide to arrest four suspects over the brutal beating and robbery on the Kong Rong Island last week,” Deputy Chief of provincial commissioner police, Colonel Kol Phally told Khmer Times.

Cambodia’s largest island in the Gulf of Siam, remote Koh Rong, has attracted the American show “Survivor” to film here later this year. But as the March 19 robbery at the Broken Heart guesthouse indicates, this remoteness seems to have bred an atmosphere of lawlessness and impunity.

An employee of Broken Heart Guesthouse told Khmer Times the story of the crime, as he heard it from Mr. Niemi.

At 10 pm on the night of crime, Mr. Niemi and Mr. Hay carried box of cash and valuables from the guesthouse reception to Mr. Niemi’s bungalow, 70 meters away. The two employees who stayed at the reception area could not see or hear past a thick cover of trees around the bungalow.

An employee said that at least three people who were hiding behind a balcony overhang attacked the two foreigners from behind.

The attackers allegedly blinded their victims with flashlights, then struck Mr. Hay over the head. Then they beat both victims with batons, stones and a dumbbell.

They took Mr. Niemi down to the sea and nearly drowned him. His employee was left bleeding on the ground near the bungalow. The attackers fled with $3,000, a camera, and business documents from the box.

I hope she is foud safe and sound. My thoughts are with her family.

Years ago on a trek in northern Thailand we lost one. English female similar age to Amelia. She'd managed to get behind the guide at the rear of the group. Wasn't noticed missing till we hit camp that night. Panic stricken guides chased back down the trail with torches.
Luckily C had done the right thing and just sat down as soon as she realised she was lost and started crying. Scary few hours for her and us but all turned out OK.

Stay positive. People do get found

Edit: This has already been shared in this group many times, I know.
As a travel blogger currently in Cambodia, I was reached out to help share the message.

Really hope she is safe and found soon 🙏🏼

British backpacker, 21, vanishes in Cambodia on gap-year amid fears she got lost in dense forest four days ago
A woman travelling by herself in Cambodia has gone missing after attending a beach party in the early hours.
October 27, 20191:26am
A British gap year student has disappeared after wandering off from a 3am beach party on an idyllic island in Cambodia.

Amelia Bambridge, 21, of West Sussex, was travelling alone for the first time in the Far Eastern country and may have got lost while walking through dense forest.

She was last seen at a beach party in Koh Rong, in the south west of the country, at 3am on Wednesday.

She was due to check out of her youth hostel on Friday to leave the island later in the afternoon with a friend.

She has been declared officially missing by local authorities.

Her worried mum, Linda, is taking an emergency flight to the island to join a search party of concerned locals and police.

As she prepared to leave the 52-year-old said: “I have got numbers of people to contact in Cambodia.

“I’m going to Bangkok, getting another flight to the country, then transport from the capital to the coastline.

“From there I will get a ferry, hopefully arriving at 2pm tomorrow afternoon local time.”

Amelia’s handbag, which had her purse, phone and bank cards in it, was found on the beach after a party held on Wednesday night. Her passport is still at the hostel, the Nest Beach Club.

It is understood there are no lights from the beach to the Nest Beach Club, which is 40 minutes away.

The area is also thickly forested.

Her mum is hoping that Amelia got “lost on her way back” and the search party will be able to find her.

Amelia’s sister Georgie, 19, is close to her and said Amelia would message the family whenever she had wifi.

She said: “She is strong minded, really sensible and very organised.

“She spent the last year Googling solo female travelling, looking at pages and blogs and sorting out everything.

“I’m just in shock, she has never done anything like this before.

“I spoke to her Wednesday and she normally messages us every now and then, every time she got wifi.

“I told her to put loads of pictures online to see what she was up to.

“It’s horrendous but we need to be positive and she needs to be found.”

Amelia left the UK last month after completing an apprenticeship.

It is her first time travelling on her own.
