Scorned Ladyboy Arrested After Throwing Acid on her Young Lover

Phnom Penh, Cambodia News: On March 15, 2019, at 08:30 pm, a 35-year-old ladyboy, Lach Sophorn, arrested after throwing acid on her much younger boyfriend in front of Le Mont Hotel, on street 304, Sangkat Bueng Kengkorng, Khan Chamkarmorn, Phnom Penh. The victim was identified as Khun Kosal, a 23-year-old man working at Le Mont Hotel.

Before the incident, the attacker had called the victim, asking him to live together with her, but the victim refused. The ladyboy was so upset with her boyfriend that she threw some acid on him, causing him serious harm.

The suspect was arrested and detained at Khan Chamkarmorn police station to follow the legal procedure.

From what I remember, acid attacks diminished quite considerably after they brought in a new law with tougher punishments a few years back. (There should be some statistics on one of those old threads.)
But, the effect hasn't lasted it seems and, again from memory, there has been an increase in the number of acid attacks by jealous ex-lovers or partners over the past year. What a cruel thing to do.

The Cambodian Acid Survivor’s Charity recently reported that acid attacks in the Kingdom have declined in recent years, with only six reported cases in 2014 compared with 36 in 2010.

It credited the decline to the stringent Law on Regulating Concentrated Acid, which was passed in 2012 and lays out harsh penalties for a variety of crimes related to the malicious use of acid.

Tougher penalties are good, but they also need to get the word out. Then again, these emotional outbursts don't seem well thought out.

Acid attack in BKK1
Police in Chamkar Morn district arrested 35 year-old Lach Sophorn, who is suspected of spewing acid onto the face and chest of his 23 year-old lover, Khun Kosal.

The police report that the incident occurred in Beung Keng Kang 2 commune, Chamkar Morn district, on Friday night, March 15. The suspect was arrested at the scene of the crime immediately after the police arrived, which was at around 8:30pm, and taken to the police station for interrogation. The victim was sent to hospital for treatment of his acid burns.

Apparently the two had had a tiff and separated. Mr Sophorn met with Mr Kosal to sort things out and have him move back in. When Mr Sophorn’s request was denied he spewed acid onto the victim in a fit of anger.
