PHNOM PENH: On any typical night around the heaving bars full of tourists and female workers, in the shadows the street pickers.
They are children, their parents and the elderly. They are grimy, hungry and desperate.
Phon Sophana is one of them. He and his family, including his wife and two young children, live on the street, foraging a living by searching through discarded waste for items of value, normally plastic bottles and cans...

Re: Scavenging for survival - Cambodia's street pickers.
Every place in Cambodia bigger than a bend in the road has them; Poipet, teeny little Tbaeng Meanchey, Siem Reap, Sihanoukville ...
They do a useful job, but it's still sad to have to see little kids doing this rather than going to school.
And they are - of course - far more to be respected than the milk-scam gangs in Siem Reap.

Re: Scavenging for survival - Cambodia's street pickers.
My landlady has bags for cans and bottles in the front yard... and she gets *paid* for them from the recycle carts.
But I collect up all mine and when I see the scavengers rifling through the bins across the street I take them out to them instead.
