Scary Confirmation of fears about work visa/work permit
Re: Scary Confirmation of fears about work visa/work permit
One of the main reasons why Kampot was so hard hit was because one of the expats there completely freaked out about the work permit issue. Apparently he kept harassing officials asking questions (and giving them the names of all of the foreigners in town) so they decided to try and enforce it. Let that be a lesson to you.

Interesting Giblet, but what is your source of information? Personally, even if that is true, I don't believe that was the driving force of the Ministry of Immigration minions. All of the places they have struck were where expats work: Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, Siam Reap, and Kampot. The exception of course were Vietnamese communities elsewhere and those lightly hit, not fined and a present to Rainsey for playing along.

Exactly, most expats there are pissed as the authorities are collecting money (because some were stupid enough to pay up) before the new law is in effect. Anyways, DON'T WORRY. This shit (in kampot) is old news.giblet wrote:One of the main reasons why Kampot was so hard hit was because one of the expats there completely freaked out about the work permit issue. Some of the posts on that thread are from Oct 8 and 11, scarcely old news. By the way what is your understanding of when the new law is in effect. Those expats who have been approached in the cities I mentioned(plus Battambang which I forgot) probably think the law is being enforced now.

Not sure why Sihanokville gets a mention. I work in a pretty high profile business on Serendipity beach, we got visited by Social Security on Thursday, no mention of work permits an I haven't hear anyone else say they have been asked. While I have no doubt this will be enforced eventually ( and that's a GOOD thing imo) it definitely isn't an issue down here yet .

Yeah, looking at that "build pro" post from the 10th it looks like kampot has some shit going down. but as giblet said, a lot of this is because of that one barang doing his 'volunteer work' for the ministry and getting dollar signs flashing in the eyes of the staff.
i'm not sure what the solution for out there would be... other than to put it off a little until phnom penh has it all sorted out and take a trip to the capital to get it done.

Well, my tits are up and rested, ready to enter the fray. OD and giblet, you seem to verify this story. Living in the sticks as I do, this story hasn't made local gossip/news, can you direct me to an online recounting of the tale? Thanks.

Work Visa's / Permits ,,,,Reminds of stories from the past , like
Advertising will be banned on tuk-tuks.
No more tuk-tuks allowed on Norodom Blvd.
All business around Wat Phnom must relocate .
All hardware business in Mao Tse Toung must relocate.
All busses must relocate outside the city center.
All bars must close by midnight .
Motorbikes drivers must wear helmets.
Motorbike's must have 2 rear view mirrors
I would write more, but I think my computer has run out of ink.
