Saving Asian elephants

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Saving Asian elephants

Someone doing good, beats reading about dead people on the dark net . :thumb: :thumb:
Sangdeaun Chailert, also known as Lek, which means "small" in Thai, was born in Thailand in 1962. In return for saving the life of a young man, her grandfather, a shaman or traditional healer, was given an elephant named Tong Kam, meaning Golden One. The bond that developed between Lek and Tong Kam sparked a love and respect for elephants that have shaped the course of her life. In 2005, Lek was honored by Time Magazine as a "Hero of Asia" for her work to protect Asian elephants. In 2010, she was honored by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton as one of six Woman Heroes of Global Conservation and recently she spoke at the United Nations' Global Pact for the Environment summit.

Ashley Bell's doc; " Love & Bananas"
The title of her documentary, which focuses on the rescue and rehabilitation of two Asian elephants in Cambodia, was inspired by the work of Lek Chailert, who runs an elephant sanctuary in Thailand.
The decline of Asian elephants is a catastrophe easily illustrated in broad strokes with bullet points written out in dripping red Chiller font letters. Love & Bananas, a documentary directed by Ashley Bell, opens with such a primer on Asian elephant declines, accompanied by animated infographics and grim statistics. Though they’re highly adaptable and can survive in a variety of climates and environments, the elephants have been completely wiped out in western Asia and China. Thailand, however, holds out hope for the species, as domestication — and, sadly, abusive practices — are embedded into the culture.

"You don't need a bull hook to control an elephant. You can guide an elephant with love... And bananas"
- Lek Chailert, Founder of Save Elephant Foundation
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST
