Saturday was Pangolin Day: Cambodia's Protected Species
Yes, it was on Saturday, but every day should be Pangolin Day. If you see pangolins or other wildlife being kept as pets, or for sale as food, the Wildlife Alliance hotline number is 012 500 094.

Conservationists Urge for Action against Illegal Wildlife in Cambodia
AKP Phnom Penh, February 19, 2021 --
As the world is going to mark the 10th annual Pangolin Day this Saturday, Wildlife Alliance urged greater action on the illegal wildlife trade in Cambodia.
In Cambodia, there is an increasing demand for wildlife products, including for the meat of pangolin, civet and bats. These species are associated with the transmission of zoonotic diseases to humans.
People who eat them are putting their lives on the line with every mouthful, Wildlife Alliance CEO Ms. Suwanna Gauntlett said.
“Consumers are taking a risk with their health every time they eat wildlife,” she underlined.
While vaccines are an important step in containing the spread of diseases from animals to humans like COVID-19, they are not the answer to preventing pandemics.
Wildlife Alliance, alongside 70 other organisations in the #EndPandemics working group, urged governments and the public to think beyond vaccines.
Wildlife Alliance combats the illegal wildlife trade, which safeguards public health. “By fighting the illegal wildlife trade we’re fighting the chances of further new pandemics developing,” Ms. Gauntlett explained.
Ms. Suwanna Gauntlett called on everyone in Cambodia to “play a role by not only stopping eating wildlife, but reporting any wildlife crimes to our hotline 012 500 094.”
Today, Wildlife Alliance reported that in a joint operation between rangers and the Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team, 2 markets and 5 roadside restaurants in Preah Sihanouk province were busted.
A total of 70kg+ of bush meat was confiscated from 5 species including, small Indian civet, water monitor, green peafowl, red muntjac and wild boar, plus 20+ birds, it added.
At the same time, some live animals were rescued, including 1 Asian leaf turtle and 3 Asian box turtles which are globally endangered.

Re: Saturday was Pagolin Day: Cambodia's Protected Species
Better late than never.
The TENTH annual World Pangolin Day will be celebrated on 20 February 2021!
World Pangolin Day is an opportunity for pangolin enthusiasts to join together in raising awareness about these unique mammals — and their plight. Pangolin numbers are rapidly declining in Asia and Africa.
The demand for pangolins comes mostly from China, where pangolin scales are unfortunately believed to be a cure-all of sorts and pangolin flesh is considered a delicacy. In Vietnam, pangolins are frequently offered at restaurants catering to wealthy patrons who want to eat rare and endangered wildlife. There is no evidence to support claims regarding medicinal properties of pangolin scales or any other part of the pangolin.

Oh Shit! Just when the Prime Minister is trying to hose down any mention of the bats...
- so CEO decides it is a good time to bring up the pangolins.

Rangers rescued a Critically Endangered Sunda Pangolin. Luckily, the pangolin was uninjured, so rangers released it into suitable habitat in the Cardamoms!
See wildlife crime? Please report it to the Wildlife Crime Hotline - Cambodia "បង្ក្រាបបទល្មើសសត្វព្រៃកម្ពុជា"or call 0125000944. Thanks for helping to protect Cambodia’s wildlife!

Re: Saturday was Pagolin Day: Cambodia's Protected Species
Published 18th February 2022
The Plight of the Pangolin – the world’s most trafficked mammal
On the eve of World Pangolin Day 2022, TRAFFIC, a Cambridge Conservation Initiative partner, shares a new video of Sir David Attenborough to raise awareness of the plight of the pangolin – the world’s most trafficked mammal.
Roasted pangolin scales have historically featured in some traditional medicine treatments for detoxification, to drain pus, relieve palsy, and stimulate lactation. More recently pangolins have also been consumed for their meat, skins, scales and claws, and demand is now decimating pangolin populations worldwide.
New data from TRAFFIC confirms that at least 23.5 tonnes of pangolins and their parts were trafficked in 2021 alone. All eight species of pangolin are listed on the IUCN’s red list of threatened species and prohibited from international commercial trade under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
Pangolins are very important in the whole ecosystem that we have... If you lose pangolins you upset all sorts of things but the sheer humanity of not looking after such a beautiful gentle animal as a pangolin breaks my heart.
Sir David Attenborough
TRAFFIC is taking action across the pangolin supply chain to reduce the threat:
investigating the motives behind those that poach and traffic pangolins to inform solutions
delivering demand reduction campaigns in Asia
maintaining a database of trafficking statistics and mapping emerging wildlife trade trends
Renewed efforts must be made to reduce consumer demand for pangolin products if we are to protect these shy, elusive animals, so vital to Asian and African ecosystems, from disappearing. ”
In recent years, there has been a heightened yet unproved association of pangolins with zoonotic disease that has prompted some promising action:
In 2020 and 2021, Viet Nam published a guidebook with alternatives to pangolin scales for use by the traditional medicine community, and a viral video, “Stop the Karma”, encouraged people to stop using pangolin products.
Meanwhile, in December 2020, China removed pangolins from its pharmacopoeia for traditional medicine – however, pharmacies can still sell medicines containing pangolin products derived from country stockpiles.
“It’s welcoming to see that Asian countries have improved the protection of pangolins, including levelling up to national first-class protected animals and restricting the use of pangolin scales in traditional medicine. However, TRAFFIC calls on the Asian governments to further strengthen the inventory management of pangolin scale, increase the transparency of stockpiled raw material consumption, and ensure that illegally sourced scales will not be laundered,” said TP Singh, Asia/Pacific Programme Director.

Re: Saturday was Pagolin Day: Cambodia's Protected Species
And in other news the sale of Pangolin soup in local ethnic restaurants went up by 400% on National Pangolin day. "It's the best pangolin I've ever had!" said Chhim Sothea from Kampong Chhnang. "We can't wait for National Pangolin day next year.." said a couple of traders in a nearby swamp by the hamlet. "We only get a couple of lousy bucks for these fucking things most of the year around but now we have an excellent annual bonus." "Yes, and they taste like toe-nails!" chuckled his friend Lan Nguyen.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Bumping up the pangolins:
Deforestation and human encroachment into protected forests is taking its toll on Cambodia's wildlife, and pangolins are facing extinction.
Short video on pangolin protection in Cambodia:
If you think you, or someone you know, would like a pet pangolin, why not just sponsor one ? Like that, you don't have to clean up the droppings, but your pangolin's caretakers will send you updated photos of it frolicking happily in the forest that you can show to your relatives. Also makes a great Xmas gift with a Cambodian flavor. Win-win.
