Sam Rainsy Summoned to Court Over Facebook Lawsuit

by Kuch Naren | March 19, 2016

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court has summoned opposition leader Sam Rainsy to appear for questioning in yet another court case, the third lawsuit he has been hit with since a warrant was issued for his arrest in November, according to a copy of the new summons obtained on Friday.

The latest case involves a complaint filed by CPP minister Som Soeun over a post on Mr. Rainsy’s Facebook page earlier this month. Mr. Rainsy accused the minister of being involved in a plan to boost Prime Minister HE’s popularity on Facebook by hiring poor people in India and the Philippines to “like” the premier’s page.

Mr. Soeun said the claim was false and promptly sued Mr. Rainsy, accusing him of “twisting the truth.”

Now, both men have been summoned to court to answer questions before deputy prosecutor Sieng Sok on March 23.

“This summons is to invite [Mr. Rainsy] to be questioned over His Excellency Som Soeun’s complaint,” Mr. Sok said, adding that Mr. Soeun had also been called to court.

Mr. Soeun’s lawyer, Suon Visal, said his client would appear next week to make his case.

Haha, you know Cambodian politics are on the right track when the prime minister is taking opposition leaders to court over comments made about Facebook LIKES.

Rainsy Guilty In HE Facebook ‘Likes’ Case
by Ouch Sony | November 9, 2016 | អានជាភាសាខ្មែរ

Opposition leader Sam Rainsy was found guilty on Tuesday of defamation over claims that the ruling CPP sought to systematically boost Prime Minister HE’s apparent Facebook popularity by ordering officials to buy fake “likes” from overseas accounts.

Mr. HE’s Facebook page has seen a surge in support over the past year from accounts in countries including India and the Philippines, where “click farms”—companies that sell fake social media popularity—are known to operate...

In a new chapter of the Facebook wars, politician Sam Rainsy is suing Facebook.

Cambodian leader HE's Facebook 'likes' subject of lawsuit
Exiled opposition leader Sam Rainsy claims prime minister bought ‘likes’ to appear popular
The exiled Cambodian politician Sam Rainsy has filed a legal suit against Facebook, demanding it hand over any information which could prove that the Cambodian prime minister, HE, purchased millions of “likes” to appear popular on the social media platform.

The lawsuit is the first time that Facebook has been sued for information regarding a world leader’s page, and could have major implications in Cambodia where Facebook is the main news source for many and hugely influential in politics.

Rainsy, who led the recently banned opposition Cambodia National Rescue party (CNRP) in the 2013 election and now lives in exile in France, was taken to court for defamation after he made the claim that Hun had misused the social media website to falsify his own popularity.

February 10 2018
Facebook sued for alleged role in Cambodian political repression
Phnom Penh: When 38 year-old labour activist Sam Sokha posted a 13 second Facebook video of herself throwing a sandal at a billboard of Cambodian’s Prime Minister HE she was charged with “insult of a public official” and “incitement to discriminate” and faces three years jail.

Across south-east Asia authoritarian governments are turning to Facebook to identify critics, vilify opposition figures and spread fake news and propaganda, rights advocates say.
The social media giants’ hosting of misleading and inaccurate stories and information is further threatening freedom of speech and political freedoms in the region as internet usage steadily increases in countries such as Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines, they say...

Reminder from the above link:
Opposition figures, many of whom have fled the country, are in hiding or in jail, have warned their followers to avoid expressing criticism of the government on Facebook and other social media networks.

Cambodian politics aside anyone who sues facebook and that arsehole zuckerberger is a world HERO. Everyone moans like hell about privacy invasion by governments but this twat is the biggest stealer of your data in the world, with the possible exception of google. Social media is used and abused by politicians on all sides in all countries and Mr. Z set the rules, allows eelctions to be tampered with and pernmits the running of these click farms to boost his income. he has absolutely no respect for the people or government or democracy.

Facebook has rejected outright Sam Rainsy’s suit for information regarding Prime Minister HE’s social media page, with the matter now in the hands of a California court to decide if it will order the Silicon Valley giant to comply with Rainsy’s request.
