Russian man tried to pass 5kg marijuana into Thailand at Koh Kong border.

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

The Thais have let her off scot free. She was an unwitting accomplice: a cart puller just hired to take his suitcase across.

The Russian has been identified as GARASHCHENKO ANDREY.

Not necessarily. That may be info they obtained from interrogating the mule. Said info might be wrong.

how would an uneducated Khmer know if he was a Russian?

Plus the artice labove states.
Police said one of the foreign Russian GARASHCHENKO ANDREY 19.12.1988 birth, passport number 715653599 transnational traveling from Cambodia into Thailand from the international gateway Watching Koh and Trat.

"how would an uneducated Khmer know if he was a Russian?"

He might have told her. The Cambodian word is very similar in sound to the Russian word. It little matters to me how or why. Please reciprocate and put me on the ignore list as I have done with you.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

She's very lucky. Saying you didn't know what the contents were is rarely considered and acceptable excuse for muling stuff over a border.

A chap with a trolley is usually available to take a case or two over the Poipet border.

"Open the case, guv. Can't take it over until I know what's in it. Know what I mean?"

It's a lot easier to grow marijuana in the relatively undeveloped countries that border Thailand than to grow it within Thailand.
Because of a slightly more lax attitude towards law enforcement, Cambodia has become a major hub for narcotics.

agree, could have become real sticky for her. Assuming she really had no clue, I am glad for her and pleased to see the system going along with it.

This story makes no sense. If these drugs belong to the Russian how did he get away?

She would have been pushing the cart along next to or at least close behind the owner and it takes 5 minutes to go through immigration. Even if he managed to clear immigration before the drugs were discovered it still takes an hour to cover the 100km to Trat, on a road that runs up a strip of land mostly less than a km wide with army checkpoints every 20kms or so. I'm not so easily convinced by her story.

Perhaps someone could come up with a theory as to how this mule system was supposed to work.
