Royal Sands Hotel claiming 400m private beach on Koh Rong ?
15 months or so ago, I posted about the large-scale destruction of the south end of Soksan beach on Koh Rong, as a large concrete dock had been built & a large area perhaps 1500m long along the beach & up to 200m into the jungle had been bulldozed & cleared, leaving it looking like a lunar landscape
I now know a new 5* beachfront hotel called the Royal Sands has been built here with room/villa prices from several hundreds of $'s per night upwards.
On their website, the hotel claims they have 400m's of private beach
Can the hotel just claim this part of the beach to be private & are all non-guests now barred from enjoying the beach there ?
The rough path over from the main village arrived at the very south end of Soksan beach, has this access to Soksan beach now been blocked ?

We know who has the lease over the island so I suppose you just buy the rights from him despite the law that says up to high water mark is government land.

Confirmation that the hotel is claiming that they have a 400m private beach.
Despite the law, the government has been allowing construction on Cambodia's beachfronts again recently, so it is entirely possible that this beach has restricted access.
Does anyone know when this resort opened ?

doesn't the Sohka hotel claim private beach?
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

This is a video of the 'project':
I watched it thinking 'I hope they didn't destroy too many trees'. Wishful thinking of course.

Anyone know who built the place, it looks very professional for Cambodia.

AFAIK the beach in front of Sokha Hotel is no longer restricted to guests and is open to the public. That changed last year I think when there was all that stuff going on about how the shoreline of Cambodia is all public land.
Before that, there used to be a guy in uniform standing up on the wall with a whistle, who would blow it and jump up and down if any poor-looking Khmers dared to venture past a certain line on the beach. Foreigners never got whistled at.
The whistle-guy is still there as Sokha security, but he doesn't have a whistle anymore and I think that (in theory at least) everyone now has the right to use the whole of the beach.

Thai company called Maxxi. Owned by swedes I believe. Those bungalows are prefab in Thailand and then shipped to Koh Rong and assembled there.willyhilly wrote: ↑Sun Jul 02, 2017 5:39 pm Anyone know who built the place, it looks very professional for Cambodia.

Re: Royal Sands Hotel claiming 400m private beach on Koh Rong ?
The destruction to the beach & land behind I saw in Feb 2016 was terrible, compared to my 1st visit over to Soksan beach in Feb 2015, when it was a beautiful natural paradise that just blew me away.
I'd been to Boracay in the Phillipines a couple of weeks before, and that was nothing, compared to Soksan beach on Koh Rong
I shall be staying on Soksan in Jan 2018, will be interesting to see if the public are allowed access to the "private" beach where guests pay several hundreds of $ upwards and are flown in by helicoptor
