More riverbank collapse:
Image
Tbong Khmom, Cambodia News: On October 14, 2018, some large boats arrived and began dredging sand from near the shore at Doun Mao village , and then there was a surprise when the river bank completely collapsed on the afternoon of October 15, taking with it a ferry boat dock used by locals.
This is not the first time there has been sand dredging in this part of the river and about 150m of land has gradually fallen into the river over the past few years. Sand dredging boats have been blamed by the local people.

After appeals to the authorities, representatives from the Ministry of Mines and Energy said that residents should report any dredging activity along the river as there are no companies licensed to take sand from that area.

Ministry defends sand dredging in Kampong Cham
19 October 2018
The Mines and Energy Ministry yesterday held a public forum with residents living in Kampong Cham province’s Kang Meas and Srey Santhor districts in order to address their concerns over riverbank collapses.

Mines and Energy Minister Suy Sem yesterday hailed the forum as a success. Mr Sem said the ministry will hold another forum to address the same issue in Srey Santhor district’s Meanchey commune on Tuesday.

Residents complained that sand dredging along the Mekong river in both districts are making people fear for the safety of their homes.

Kampong Cham Governor Kuoch Chamroeun said officials disseminated information on proper ways to dredge sand and why the Mines and Energy Ministry has allowed local businesses to operate sand dredging ventures.

Everything is fine. As long as you don't live on the banks of the Mekong.

Sand dredging in Kampong Cham to resume after forum held
19 October 2018
Public forum was held on Thursday at the request of Minister of Education, Youth and Sport Hang Chuon Naron to address the ongoing sand dredging operation along the Mekong river.Earlier on August 22, Naron called on Prime Minister HE to provide a solution to the sand pumping activity taking place in Kang Mead district, Kampong Cham province.

He stressed that the dredging went on despite there being an agreement between the authorities and the company which carried out the activity to stop pumping.

He said it had made people who live along the river banks uneasy about their houses being affected by possible erosion due to the nonstop sand dredging operation in the area.

So, it's not the dredging, it's all due to natural erosion ?
But is it a good idea to continue dredging sand from the river after the latest floods have weakened all the riverbanks ? Umm. That would be my question for their forum.

The dredging is the problem. The river banks are always fluid but the dredging exacerbates erosion. In Kandal’s Sa Ang district there is a huge sandbank on the south side of the Bassac. In the dry it is heavily cultivated, it must be several hectares in size.
Locals say it will never happen but dredging is inevitable. It will be devastating for those living on the river. My wife’s house is in the centre of the sandbank. There has been no dredging there but only a couple of Ks north the river bank is collapsing. They may lose the road. This is natural erosion.

The high water levels over the rainy season this year, combined with the sand-dredging, have considerably weakened the riverbanks.

Kampong Cham, Cambodia News: According to Mr. Khaew Kahnareth, Minister of Information, on November 02, 2018, the riverbank at Elephant Park in Kampong Cham has collapsed.
The erosion area is 4 meters wide and 150 meters long, affecting the base of the Elephant Statue and the staircase.
