Reforming Cambodia's education system

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

I found that the most important thing that helped the kids in my family learn English was the Samsung tablet. Look at the amount of entertainment for kids there is on Utube ,, in English , compared to Khmer .

Morning school classes for English and Khmer classes in the afternoon only amount to a few hours a day ,,, minus the time spent playing. But with a tablet having access to wifi, it lets them learn by themselves evenings and weekends.

Also the 14 yo boy in the village learnt how to make '' slime '' from watching Utube on the tablet, then ended up selling heaps to the other kids at school and even had the teachers buying the stuff of him.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Education Ministry trying to hit 'ambitious targets' by 2030
19 March 2018 20:37 ICT
Cambodia has reached near universal access to primary education, though the rate of students graduating from upper secondary school and those enrolled in higher education is still lagging, Education Minister Hang Chuon Naron said on Monday during his ministry’s annual meeting.

Of the students who enter primary education, only half complete Grade 9. But of those who continue their schooling, 70 percent eventually graduate from Grade 12. Fewer than 20 percent of the country’s population has attained a higher education degree, Chuon Naron said.

“For that reason, we have set very ambitious targets,” he said.

The education system in Cambodia has long struggled with an inadequate number of teachers and the caliber of existing ones, among other issues, such as a lack of facilities and outdated curriculums.

Higher education reform gets $90M
30 April 2018
Cambodia's higher education sector – which education officials last month said lacks a clear vision – will undergo improvements under a six-year project financed by a $90 million no-interest loan from the World Bank.

The World Bank on Friday announced that its board of executive directors had approved the financial support for the project, which will help improve access to and quality of education and research, as well as strengthen the governance of higher education institutions.

Experts in the past have said the country’s universities are ill-equipped to properly prepare students with the skills needed upon graduation.

The project also aims to expand universities in Battambang and Svay Rieng provinces, and there are plans to build dormitories in Phnom Penh, according to the announcement.

Bou Saroeun, spokesman for the World Bank, said the funding will have to be repaid, but without interest. A team with the World Bank will work closely with the Ministry of Education to oversee the project.

In China, university jobs are the lowest paying teaching jobs of them all.

I actually enjoy the fact that Cambodian kids think "HelloWhat'sYourName" is a standard greeting, and there's no hint of query in it.

I had one guy ask "What are doing this weekend?" as he walked out and closed the door behind him. I just started at the door. Maybe I was supposed to respond to him as he made his way down the stairs? Sometimes it's hard to tell rudeness from ignorance. He probably thought I was rude not to respond.
