Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

If anything land is going up as usual. My friend (the Belgian one) bought land near Don Bosco for $120 per sq and sold it six months ago at $400 per sq and now it’s $700!

I do only have one friend by the way.

Well it looks like we will not be getting a invite to your Christmas party.

Build basins for wastewater, businesses told

The National Committee for the Management and Development of Coastal Zones and the Preah Sihanouk Provincial Hall have instructed all hotels, guesthouses and other business outlets to install wastewater treatment basins to prevent wastewater from directly flowing into the sea.

Provincial Hall spokesman Or Saroeun said yesterday that the instruction was issued last week following images on Facebook showing wastewater flowing into the sea from Sokha Hotel and Xihu Hotel in the province.

He said the NCMD and Provincial Hall had issued letters to the two hotels as well as other establishments to install the basins in order to prevent wastewater from flowing directly into the sea, rivers and lakes, which affects the environment and people’s health.

“We are already addressing the issue at the provincial level and at the national level the NCMD, Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Tourism are building four wastewater treatment plants,” he said. “Although construction has not yet been completed, we are working hard in order for this work to be completed soon to solve this problem.”

He urged the public to be patient while the issue is being resolved.

On Thursday, the Information Ministry posted a statement from Land Management Minister Chea Sophara, who is also NCMD chairman, instructing relevant authorities not to approve the construction of gated communities, hotels, guesthouses, restaurants or tourist recreation spots, especially in the coastal provinces, unless they seek permission from the ministry by providing construction plans of treatment basins.

Mr Sophara also said that working teams will speed up the construction of all four wastewater treatment plants and complete them before the upcoming Khmer New Year.

According to Preah Sihanouk Governor Yun Min, one plant will be located in Lek Bey commune, another next to Sokha Hotel, the third near the creek of Dexihu building and the last near the port to Koh Rong in Ochheuteal Beach.

Nobody ever asks developers how they will deal with the lack of infrastructure on ANY project, anywhere in Cambodia. THAT is the issue.

I'm not sure what that means. I think most new buildings have septic tanks already, and that black flow off comes from them, rather than raw sewage. So are they saying that these hotels have to install a storage tank for their effluent? How long before they fill up and then where does the mess go? :?

If we can get more Chinese nationals drowning in a bucket of shit maybe they will build something for us. Otherwise yes, if you have a 2000 room hotel (that place in Otres is minimum 5000) and everyone takes a crap, it has to go somewhere. It's just a hole, not a septic tank. There's the guy with the Rang Rover truck but how much poo can he suck as just one man?
