Ratanakiri Rice Farmer Slices his Stomach Open
Cambodia News (Ratanakiri): On July 9, 2020, a 47-year-old farmer, Keo Pheunh, was seriously injured after using a field knife to slice open his stomach in a hut at a rice field in Samot Krom village, Lumpat district, Ratanakiri.
The victim's wife confirmed that her husband had used a knife to slice his stomach, but the reason for his gesture remains unexplained, although it may have been an attempt at suicide. The rice farmer was sent to the provincial hospital in Banlung for urgent treatment and is recovering.

They seem to choose some awful painful ways to try to kill themselves

Why? If it was a plea for help, he could have used a blunt stick. If he really wanted to kill himself, a short, pointy knife like hara kiri is more effective.
It’s not possible to easily cut yourself in half with that long handled field machete.
Guaranteed suffering, and horrible infection afterwards. Not a quick and painless death.

Looks a pic from the hospital. Maybe a makeshift compression bandage? Something to hold pressure after the wound (assuming it just sliced skin and didn’t cut through bowel) is sutured to keep the pressure from undoing the sutures.
Of course this is just all speculation from a westerner trying to imagine that Khmer are trying to give proper care, without any of the materials and equipment available in the west.
