It is difficult to understand why they persist in trying to eradicate a plant used traditionally in their culture when legalising it would bring enormous financial benefit to the country both in tourism and export of concentrates to legal pharmaceutical manufacturers.
I suppose the innate conservatism, and inertia of the "war on drugs" initiated by President Nixon holds them in thrall to failed policies of the past.
Many American states have enjoyed a significant tax revenue from this source.
Even the right wing Thais are now taking advantage of this in a controlled and regulated fashion.
Quite absurd given the continued availability of sleepy soup and Kru Khmer medicines.

Even more when there is a situation with meth, drinking, and face-loosing issues.
Even more when garment business is huge, and producing instead of importing textile seems a step-up.
