HE promises to slash electricity prices.

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

HE promises to slash electricity prices in major populist pitch to Cambodian voters

By Jack Board
07 Jul 2018

At the official launch of the campaign of his ruling party - the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) - on Saturday (Jul 7) HE promised to slash power prices throughout the country for all users, including businesses, from 2019.

Private consumers in some provinces, including the capital Phnom Penh currently pay US$0.75 per kilowatt hour. That is nearly five times the price in Singapore.

His pledge means low-electricity users of up to 10kwh per month - typical rural households - will save about 40 per cent on their usage. The savings for heavier users - more than 250 kwh per month, common for a household using regular air conditioning, is more far more modest (1.3 per cent).

I hope so. I miss my old electricity bills in Vietnam, literally half the cost of here
If you enjoy noise pollution and obnoxious driving practices, Phnom Penh is the place for you!

I care more about reliability than cost, tbh.

Maybe, but I suspect users in our village will put the TV on all day and crank up the karaoke all night.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

Haha don't be silly, everything is closed 10pm latest. And then the farming community are in bed well before that at 6pm.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

It won't help too much if the law that landlords aren't allowed to charge an inflated price for the electricity isn't enforced. And yes, they do that to poor Cambodians as well as us.

It's $0.20/KwH (780r) in Kampot.

Different elsewhere?

^^Depends, usually if you're in an apartment complex or under a landlord, you get charged extra because Cambodia. 3,000r is a bit steep as quoted, but the last condo I stayed in charged me 1,200 r a Kw/h, and some of my neighbors ended up paying $300-400 a month when they didn't watch their usage.

As far as I know, baseline rates are 700-850r per Kw/h.
