Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): According to the report of the Chbar Ampov police, Oknha Chheang Rath, company director and 40-year-old husband of Srey Oun Samros Cheat, died by hanging himself on October 11, 2023 at his home in Sangkat Veal Sbov, Khan Chbar Ampov, Phnom Penh. The body was found by the victim's brother-in-law at 14:50.

A police statement from Mao Sivorn, the victim's brother-in-law, says: “Before the incident, on October 11, 2023, my family and I went to celebrate Pchum Ben with the family in Prey Veng province. As for my brother-in-law, Chheang Roth, he told me that he would not go with them because he was busy going to Kampong Cham to see a Chinese teacher. Later on the same day, about 14:50, I returned home and found my brother-in-law's car parked in front of the house, then I unlocked the house and walked out the back where I found the dead body of my brother-in-law hanging, tied to the back door, and I immediately called the police. ”

As for the reason that led to the death of the tycoon, his brother-in-law, Mao Sivan, claimed that the deceased was under a lot of mental stress due to personal problems involving his wife and family, including a possible divorce.
According to the post mortem examination, the forensic experts concluded that the victim committed suicide by hanging himself with a hammock.

Suicide or murder ?
The family of the deceased tycoon appears to be divided over his cause of death.

Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): Meanwhile, the sister of the victim is not satisfied with the finding of suicide as the cause of her brother's death, and on 13 October she issued a statement asking that the police make further inquiries to establish the true cause of death.

There is still much suspicion surrounding the reasons for the death of Tycoon Chheang Rath on the evening of 11 October. Although the authorities have stated that the tycoon died by hanging himself, the sister of Duke Chheang Rath has told the media that she does not believe that her brother committed suicide as claimed by the police. She is pleading with the authorities to investigate the case clearly, because when he was found, her brother’s face and feet had visible bruises. If he did commit suicide, what did the bruises on his face and feet have to do with him hanging himself ? How did they suddenly appear ?

Mr. Chheang Roth's sister said she suspected that someone had taken the opportunity, to abuse her brother when he was alone in the house, and then pretend that it was suicide. She believes that Duke Rath did not commit suicide, but that someone else killed him and disguised the death as a suicide. Therefore, she has asked the police authorities to interrogate all possible suspects and to conduct a full investigation to determine if there was foul play.

Separately, Mr. Chheang Roth's brother-in-law, Mao Sivorn, who found the body, explained to the authorities that the decision by Mr. Chheang Roth to end his life was caused by a mental crisis due to a family break up and divorce.

According to the police, forensic experts have concluded that the victim actually committed suicide by hanging himself with a hammock. At present, the victim's body is being buried by their family traditionally at the house where the incident took place and most media outlets have not published any images of Chheang Roth's death in order to preserve the family's right to privacy.

Please note that in a case of suicide or murder, only trained medical staff and police officers with technical forensic expertise can evaluate whether further forensic investigation is necessary. Statements made by persons involved in the case, such as the close family, must be reported and investigated by police.

Ms. Suntory reported that someone had taken control of her Facebook page at around 10 am on Friday, October 20, 2023.
