Police Crack Down on Foreigners on Rental Motorbikes in Siem Reap

Siem Reap, Cambodia: On 7 March, 2019, foreigners were reminded that it is illegal for them to rent motorbikes in Siem Reap, when police cracked down and seized 9 motorbikes that had been rented to foreigners.

The no-rental to foreigners law is specific to Siem Reap, and was often ignored by local motorbike rental outfits. The provincial traffic police chief Chim Sovann has declared that this law will now be strictly enforced. All motorbikes found to be rented by tourists will be confiscated and impounded by the traffic police.
Khim Bun Song, governor of Siem Reap province, has sent a letter to all authorities informing them of the ban. For their own safety, foreigners are required to use a tuktuk with a driver to travel around the city, and to visit Angkor Wat and the region.

Tourists renting Motorbikes in Siem Reap may need Visa Extensions and enough cash to get their Passport back from the rental shop. Will rental shops be punished ?

Great to know that it's only unsafe to ride a motorbike in that not so little tourist town and on these treacherous roads around the temples.
The rest of cambodia is basically safe.

Nothing to do with safety, all to do with the Tuk-tuk Mafia.

Renting motorbikes to foreigners has been illegal in Siem Reap for some years, not sure since when - Hanno would know better than I do. Some tourists asked me about it just last week and all I could say was that AFAIK it's officially illegal, but probably still possible. Sometimes there are laws that are not enforced.
So, now I know, but am wondering how this works for foreign residents ? Are they getting hassles from the cops too ?

Aww c'mon guys. Merely financial foreplay before Cambodian New year. Happens every year year around this time. Other hustles throughout the KofW will soon come into play.

They should ban all the tourist busses from siem reap town and make everyone use tuktuks. Traffic in Siem reap sucks with these busses blocking the roads.

It was strictly enforced when I moved to Siem Reap in 2009; no way to rent a motorbike for tourists. Residents did not get hassled though. People started pushing the envelope a little later but this was cracked down upon when the Tuk-tuk Mafia protested. For the last couple of years, motorbikes were once again for rent everywhere.

Totally agree with the big tour buses, especially when the fcukwit of a driver does a 47-point turn on Sivutha so the Korean/Chinese passenger do not have to walk more than two meters to the duty-free shop/restaurant/Chinese medicine shop.

It has never been "illegal" to rent to foreigners in S.R

It's been "banned", for the reason Hanno pointed out; Tuk Tuk and Tour Guide cartel.inc
