Police Are Stopping Vehicles in Sihanoukville For Not Having Road Tax Sticker

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Most countries I know have some sort of road tax, where exactly does the fleecing part come in?
fleecing starts when you go to dept of transport to do road tax or what ever "license", then you will need a host of other documents that needs more money to obtain, and the best past is, after you gotten all those documents they dont even bother to look at them and expect another "payment" to rubber stamp it, that is fleecing bro
I've been getting my "license" for the past 7 years and cannot say that I have experienced any of the above..
good for you bro, i have not been so lucky, maybe its becoz whenever i stepped into any of these "governmental" offices i am always confrontational
Money is not the problem, the problem is no money

I'm sure its different for a car, but for my moto;
I went into the dept of transport last year, the officer at the desk was talking to another customer. He looked up at me and asked what i want. I said a tax sticker for my moto. He asked big or small. I said small. He opened a box, took out a sticker, handed it to me. I gave him the 4500riel i already had in my hand, said thank you and good bye.
I'm sure it was less than a minute :pardon:

But you don't need a license for a motorbike 125cc or less, right ? So, don't need insurance either ?

And does "road tax sticker" mean vehicle registration ? This is also something that you don't need any more for motos since 2015 AFAIK. It's hard to keep up, but should be on FB somewhere.
Thank god someone has finally given me the low down on licenses for 125cc and under! Yep, I also read that road tax was no longer required by law. Just more SNVL nasty greedy police.

You definitely do need the vehicle registration in your name, with your fake/non-existent/number-less road address. You're supposed to register the vehicle in your name within 3 months of purchase, you can't just have a chain of photocopies of previous owner's driving licences.
This is not really surprising as I was tooling along Ekareach and they had a road block but they pulled the Khmer in front of me and did a stare at my windscreen before moving out of the way. I was surprised as it was a fairly flash motor, I initially assumed it was me they were after. The vehicle road safety tags are a joke but I have one. Took my brother-in-law with me to get it, after he said, "Do you have a lot of small riel? Bring a lot of small riel." 3000 - 5000 as we passed through various stages of the road safety test, depending on your rank/importance/whether you issued the sticker or not.
Ha! interesting how they do it. lol. Vehicle registration was done away with as being too complicated to enforce and too unpopular I thought? Or so HE says.

The 2015 tax sticker for motos is still needed until sep/oct.
HE said last year that the 2015 sticker is the final one, after that there will be no road tax for motos under 125cc.

I leave all the stickers from past years and safety check stickers on my windshield so they really have to work at it to see my current stickers.

Kind of impossible if you can't find the last owner on the ID card. The bloke I bought a moto off some years back sadly passed away (was a mate). If buying off an expat who left ages ago not a chance. Hardly anyone I know puts a second hand moto in their name.Never needed to. Was useful if going over to Thailand as its needed at the border to proceed. Carrying the card around then you loose it, very difficult or probably impossible if not already in your name to get another. Got my ID cards copied and notarized, carry them hidden under a panel on the moto.

Monday 5/23 I am off to have a 4 wheel vehicle transferred to my name. If Mon. is not another holiday. I'll let yall know how it goes. I have the man I purchased from (Khmer) accompanying me.
I will also take my 500cc moto docs with me & try that again. First time I tried the moto transfer they would not even look t the paper work. man said it has PP plates so must go PP.

Automobile is SKV plated so hopefully all that will be needed is a smile & some mordida or what ever they call it here. Oh yeah, I think they call it tea time. Like golf.
