A Malaysian company will begin construction on a new domestic terminal at Phnom Penh International Airport soon, at a cost of about $23 million, the firm announced in a filing to the Malaysian stock exchange on Wednesday.
Citing a rapid increase in passengers transiting through Cambodia’s three international airports, the filing submitted by Muhibbah Engineering says that the project “to design and construct a new domestic terminal of the Phnom Penh Airport in Cambodia” will commence “immediately” and wrap up by the end of 2017.
Muhibbah has a 30 percent stake in Cambodia Airports—which holds the concession to operate the Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and Sihanoukville airports—with French construction company Vinci holding the remaining 70 percent. New international terminals were officially opened in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap last month, built at a combined cost of $100 million.
A total of 353,948 domestic passengers passed through the Phnom Penh airport in 2015, according to Cambodia Airports, compared to 239,101 the year before. And 101,318 domestic passengers transited through the airport in the first three months of this year, putting it on track to exceed last year’s total.
Sin Chansereivuth, a spokesman for the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation, said the new domestic terminal would alleviate congestion at the international terminal.
“Currently, check-ins for international and domestic flights at the same terminal take time and can become crowded,” he said, noting that security measures for domestic departures were more lax, allowing for speedier check-ins.
Cambodia Airports spokesman Khek Norinda said the domestic terminal was the final stage of improvements to the Phnom Penh airport, and that construction was due to begin in the “coming weeks.”
“The new terminal, with enlarged space and further improved services, will be instrumental in handling present and future passenger traffic growth.” he said in an email.

why do they need a new domestic airport ?
when outside of PP there are ONLY 2 other airports, there only like 7 departures/day and only to sr
what a waste of money but someone will get a new suv or 2

Re: Phnom Penh to Get New $23 Million Domestic Airport Terminal
It frees up precious terminal space for the increasing international flights, which are quite a few now and growing in number. The new domestic terminal seems a little premature now, but flight numbers should continue to increase. The Chinese hordes have only just begun to travel. And it won't be long before SHV gets domestic flights to and from PP. It will be leaps better than a miseraable and deadly 4 hour bus ride or an 8 hour train ride.

$23m would build a very nice hospital, but hey...
Rutiger, you would get on a plane serviced by Khmer staff, and with a Khmer pilot?
The bus is way safer, as is the train, witness the banged up Lexus on the tracks a few days ago.
I suspect one has to be at the airport an hour before departure. Add another 30 minutes in Sinville for clearance, and 30 minutes haggling with tuk-tuk mafia, one has saved what? 2 hours? Is the increased cost worth it?

Domestic terminals don't necessarily mean Cambodian-owned airlines. AirAsia might fly those domestic flights, or Bangkok Air or anyone else when domestic routes eventually become profitable. That might take a decade, but no reason not to start to build the infrastructure now.vladimir wrote:Rutiger, you would get on a plane serviced by Khmer staff, and with a Khmer pilot?

Is it worth the cost? Yes, for those who put a reasonable value on their time. Those domestic flights will primarily be flown by short-term tourists and some business people, both groups who want to minimize actual travel time between destinations and are willing to pay 10x the cost for increased travel speed. And only skint tossers haggle 30 minutes with tuktuk drivers. Those same people would haggle 30 miniutes at the bus or train stations too upon arrival.

Re: Phnom Penh to Get New $23 Million Domestic Airport Terminal
i seriously doubt any thai airlines would do domestic routes in Cambodia
Personally i think they would be better off expanding the current airport, which is what they did here in Phuket ( due to open in June) to handle the increased traffic
NOte, there is talk ( rumors) of building a separate terminal JUST for the Chinese hoards who have no idea how to act

I don't know the last time you used the PP airport but it has been expanded and is continuing to expand.phuketrichard wrote:i seriously doubt any thai airlines would do domestic routes in Cambodia

They have invested a lot already in expanding the international departures and arrivals areas.

Ok. A lot of work has been done since then. It almost resembles a proper airport now.
Still a lot of work going on. I'm not sure on when it is supposed to be completed.

I still think it's a great airport, very short clearing time compared to most. I don't think that's going to last long now. I was pleasantly surprised at the speed with which I cleared in Bangkok. Yangon was a total nightmare, even though we were the only arrival, Qatar was the worst I have ever seen, but it is apparently OK now.
