Phnom Penh, “a city of garbage”; Globe article.

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Back before ASEAN there was a concerted effort to clean up a lot of Phnom Penh especially anywhere that visitors may see. A lot of new green bins about. On 172 there were about 20 bins all up from Smile Mart near Wat Ounalom to Norodom.

It made a difference. In the alley at the rear of the Hyatt where they unload their garbage there used to be a big pile of rubbish that was strewwn everywhere by fossickers. This was solved by the bins with about 10 bins located at that site. Also at stages along the road bins had been placed.

Now there are only 4 bins there, none to beseen in rest of the street.

I asked one shop ownerwho was happy they had a bin near them and she said that she got rid of it because it smelled bad. God forbid they would clean the bloody thing ....ever. It would seem that this was a general complaint with all I spoke with.

Sadley the garbage problem has reverted to pre ASEAN rat piles and It seems a large area of this area of Phnom Penh has reverted to smelly, yuckky normal.

To those who will say that I should have done something about it myself I will say I did. I borrowed a hose and cleand a few. I quit when it became "my job"

Street 172 is not representative of the whole city.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
