Phnom Penh bridges - building and renovating

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

More bridges for Phnom Penh : The pace of bridge construction in Cambodia's capital is picking up, as Phnom Penh struggles to keep pace with an expanding population and the circulation problems that come with it.

- The Overseas Cambodia Investment Corporation (OCIC) will spend $35 million to build a concrete bridge across the Tonle Sap River from the Sokimex gasoline station in Russey Keo district to the Prek Tasek commune in Chroy Changvar district. Work on the bridge will start soon and it is aimed at cutting back on traffic congestion.

“The groundbreaking ceremony for the new bridge will be held on the same day as the opening of another bridge, which will also be a $9 million construction site for people to cross the river, while the old Chroy Changvar Bridge will be completely closed for repairs after Pchum Ben,” Mr Samnang added.

The new bridge across the Tonle Sap River will be 20.5 metres wide and 500 metres long and will take about 28 months to complete, according to Mr Samnang. It will look like the Tsubasa Bridge, he said.

Be prepared. The Chroy Changvar bridge, otherwise known as the Japanese Friendship Bridge, is due to close for works on 1 October. This is bound to create traffic congestion.

Chroy Changva Bridge to close
The Chroy Changva Bridge will be temporarily closed for 21 months starting in early October to repair it at a cost of about $33 million.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency yesterday released a statement regarding the overhaul of the bridge, also known as the Cambodian-Japanese Friendship Bridge.

The statement said the closure will commence on October 1 and last until June 2019, with the Japanese government donating the funds needed for the repairs.

During the repair, JICA said there may be serious traffic congestion in the area around the construction site, especially at the roundabouts on either side of the bridge...

Hardly seems that many years ago that they shut the bridge for repairs for quite a number of months.

Yes. I'm guessing the one needing maintenance is on the south side / downstream.

The Cambodian-Japanese Friendship Bridge is the southern one, it was built in the mid 60s and then the middle section was destroyed by PAVN commandos in 1973, it was more than 20 years before it was repaired, again with Japanese aid. The northern bridge was built with Chinese aid and only opened in late 2014.

The Japanese seem to give a lot of money to projects in Cambodia.

The highway down to Snooky was paid for by them, these bridges, & then the sewage improvement works around the Riverside over the last 4 years, as well

Chroy Changvar Bridge open for KNY
The first Chroy Changvar Bridge, (more commonly known as the Cambodian-Japanese Friendship Bridge) will be temporarily opened for Khmer New Year in mid-April.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport announced on its Facebook page on Friday (Feb 1) that the repairs on the Cambodia-Japan Friendship Bridge, which began in September 2017, are now 93 percent finished. The reconstruction project should to be completed on June 14, 2019.

Because the bridge’s repairs have progressed faster than expected, the ministry decided that it can be used to ease traffic flow during Khmer New Year.
In March 2016 the Japanese government granted funds for the reconstruction of the bridge, which suffered cracks from 12 years of usage. The rehabilitation project, guided by Central Consultant Inc. and carried out by the Obayashi Corporation (both Tokyo-based), began late 2017.

I was surprised at the scale of the work repairing the bridge. They basically rebuilt the entire thing. Must have been pretty poorly constructed if it only lasted 12 years.
