Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. So you get onto the single track somewhere near the old Pochentong station, then what? The track from there goes across a few level-crossings at major junctions like Hanoi St, 598, Kim Il Sung and then ends up at where? The old train station, not particularly convenient for anywhere these days. They should have doubled up that track and pushed it all the way through to the riverside way back, instead of building office blocks in the path. I'm all for smart initiatives but I'm failing to see how this could be of any benefit whatsoever.
The trains will have to travel from PP station past the turnoff, then change directions down the branch line to the airport, due to the way it's been built.

Fresh News says the plans are ontrack to be completed by Khmer New Year.

Trains from Phnom Penh-PP Airport and Battambang-Svay Sisophon to Launch Prior to Khmer New Year
02/03/18 17:26
Phnom Penh (FN), March 1 - Senior Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol met with the Royal Railway Company on Thursday at the ministry to discuss the launching of trains from Phnom Penh to Phnom Penh International Airport and from Battambang to Svay Sisophon province before the upcoming Khmer New Yea in mid April.

These trains aim to contribute to ease the transportation of passengers and cargo, while in particular is to reduce traffic accidents and jams.

Senior Minister Sun Chanthol expressed his profound thanks to the delegation of Royal Railway and other relevant partners for boosting this project to success.

Passengers to pay no fare in first month of new rail lines
The new railway services due to come online in April will be free for all passengers during their first month of operation, according to a representative of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport.

A new train service linking Battambang and Poipet, in the border with Thailand, is scheduled to launch operations next month. It is part of a wider project known as the western rail line, which will eventually connect Phnom Penh and Bangkok, via Thailand’s Aranya Pratet in the border.

In addition, a new train will soon allow commuters to travel from downtown Phnom Penh to the capital’s international airport.

Both lines will allow passengers to travel for free in their inaugural month, which includes Khmer New Year in mid-April, one of the country’s busiest holiday periods, according to Chan Kimleng, director of the railway department.

“We won’t charge a fare during the first month, including Khmer New Year,” Mr Kimleng explained. “We will even try to make the service free until the general elections, if possible.”

What Princeling is behind this train line? Are they banking on something else besides this ticket revenue? Because I don't see how this will be viable. What kind of stock are they going to the to the airport and back, and at what frequency?

I can get a passap tuk tuk for $3.50 that takes me from the airport to my door in BKK3. Why would I want to pay anything more than 2000r to take a slow train to La Gare if I have to then change to a tuk tuk anyway? If you've seen it in person, you would agree it's a bizarre and half arsed shambles.

They claim it will run every 25 minutes but haven't revealed the price. I'm not sure what the benefit is either, especially if you are travelling as a couple (or more). Previous articles indicated the price could be between $5-7 which is ridiculous given you can catch a train to Kampot for that price. The bus is only 1500 riel.

It will take 25 minutes to get from the airport to the main line unless the block all traffic from the road they're building the line on.

On March 9, the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Sun Chanthol, said that the government has ordered an acceleration in the railway construction between Phnom Penh Railway Station and Phnom Penh International Airport. The railway is expected to be operational before Khmer New Year.

In the north, the new stretch of railway between Battambang and Sisophon is expected to be completed on 4 April 2018.

That'd be outside the HE villa exclusion zone, but must be inside the airport exclusion zone
