72 People Get Food Poisoning at Funeral Ceremony

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

I always get a little sick from the food when I stay in the province. Missus, too.

Dirty dishes are cleaned by letting the dogs lick off all the food particles.

Wiping them vigorously with a tissue before use doesn’t necessarily remove all the germs.
Man Idk what province you went to but I've never seen any of the stray/ partially domesticated dogs getting anywhere near a plate.

Cooking on the floor while the dogs are roaming around, not washing their hands after handling raw meat/ seafood (raw meat/ seafood that's been sitting in a plastic bag, on the floor, for at least 2 hours), using the same knife to cut raw chicken and veggies, digging for gold and adding extra protein to the meal... the list goes on and on.

I might not get sick from eating the food, but since the preparation is beyond unsanitary and the food itself is very bland, I'd rather pass on the food and wait until I get home to whip something up. No need to fly back to my home country.

The family never got offended. I explained from the get go that my stomach was very sensitive and that I didn't want my asshole to turn into a geyser (I mimicked the whole geyser thing). They laughed. I laughed. Everyone was happy. My stomach was very grateful. I dodged two food poisonings including one that kept ol girl in bed for two days straight.

At ours when the missus is cooking everything gets washed after use, the spare food is scraped into the dog's tin and then its washed up. This is all in water out of the concrete butt, though. Avoiding cross contamination is a skill yet to be learnt, same as with washing hands with soap. I have yet to meet any Khmer who uses the fridge to store their leftovers, if you're lucky it's under a cover, otherwise you and the flies are having an equal go at it.

When I wanted to get kitchen staff to wash their hands I bought a jazzy looking liquid soap dispenser. Everyone thought it was great fun and they used up the soap at a great rate too. It wasn't a cheap option, but had a lot of success. :smileinbox:

I've found at ceremonies it's usually sitting around for ages and cold by the time anyone eats it and tastes rough. Not too bad freshly cooked but I'm no huge fan.
